A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
TO REQUEST THE HONORABLE JIM HODGES, GOVERNOR, TO MAKE AVAILABLE TO SCHOOLS IN THE STATE THE DEPARTMENT OF HUMAN AFFAIRS' COMMUNITY RELATIONS UNIT TO PROVIDE COUNSELING TO STUDENTS WHO MAY BE IN NEED OF SUCH ASSISTANCE AS A RESULT OF THE TRAGIC EVENT THIS WEEK AT COLUMBINE HIGH SCHOOL IN LITTLETON, COLORADO.
Whereas, the tragedy that occurred at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado this week has shocked the country and stunned the world; and
Whereas, the country watched in disbelief as this horrific shooting of students by fellow students occurred in this suburban high school; and
Whereas, such carnage wreaked by teens against their peers is incomprehensible, tragic, and seemingly unpredictable; and
Whereas, while the country is grieving for the loss of these victims and their families, students and parents across the country are fearful for their own safety and the safety of their own children; and
Whereas, a secure, protected school environment is surely a reasonable expectation and necessary for the success of the educational process; and
Whereas, South Carolina is proud of its schools and strives to provide a safe, secure environment conducive to learning; and
Whereas, in view of these recent events it is appropriate to reassure students and parents who may have fears and anxieties for themselves and their children. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, requests the Honorable Jim Hodges, Governor, to make available to the schools in the State the Department of Human Affairs' Community Relations Unit to provide counseling to students who may be in need of such assistance as a result of the tragic event this week at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Honorable Jim Hodges, Governor, State of South Carolina.
