 SEVENTH EPISCOPAL DISTRICT OF THE AFRICAN METHODIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH FOR HIS
 DEVOTED SERVICE AND INVALUABLE CONTRIBUTIONS MADE TO THE CHURCH AND TO THE
 CITIZENS OF THIS STATE AND NATION AND TO WISH HIM WELL IN HIS FUTURE
 ENDEAVORS.

TO HONOR BISHOP JOHN HURST ADAMS, SENIOR BISHOP, SEVENTH EPISCOPAL DISTRICT OF THE AFRICAN METHODIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH FOR HIS DEVOTED SERVICE AND INVALUABLE CONTRIBUTIONS MADE TO THE CHURCH AND TO THE CITIZENS OF THIS STATE AND NATION AND TO WISH HIM WELL IN HIS FUTURE ENDEAVORS.

Whereas, Bishop John Hurst Adams, Senior Bishop of the Seventh Episcopal District of the African Methodist Episcopal Church was born in Columbia, South Carolina, the son of the Reverend and Mrs. E. A. Adams; and

Whereas, Bishop Adams is married to Dr. Dolly Desselle Adams, formerly of New Orleans, Louisiana, and they are the proud parents of three daughters, Gaye D. Adams-Massey, Jann Hurst Adams-Brogdon, and Madelyn Rose Adams-Cobb and seven grandchildren; and

Whereas, Bishop Adams was educated in the public schools of Columbia, received his A. B. from Johnson C. Smith University in North Carolina, and his clerical degrees from Boston University School of Theology; and

Whereas, since 1950, the Bishop has pastored A.M.E. churches from Massachusetts to Waco, Texas, Seattle, Washington, and Los Angeles, California. Since 1972 when he was elevated to Bishop, John Hurst Adams has served as the Bishop over the Tenth Episcopal District (Texas), the Second Episcopal District (Mid-Atlantic area), the Sixth Episcopal District (Georgia), and since 1992, the Seventh Episcopal Church (South Carolina); and

Whereas, the Seventh Episcopal District is the A.M.E. Church's largest with six hundred nine churches and a constituent membership of nearly two hundred eighty thousand. Under Bishop John Hurst Adams, the A.M.E. Church in South Carolina has thrived and prospered. He has initiated many new congregations for the Seventh District just as he initiated sixty new congregations in the Tenth, Second, and Sixth Episcopal Districts; and

Whereas, Bishop John Hurst Adams has shepherded many special and important ministries. He is now the chairman of the board of trustees of Allen University in Columbia and has guided this excellent institution to the heights it reaches today; and

Whereas, Bishop John Hurst Adams has been honored and recognized for his distinguished achievements by many humanitarian and educational organizations; the State of South Carolina has awarded him the Order of the Palmetto for his good works; and

Whereas, it is fitting that the members of the General Assembly pause in their deliberations to praise Bishop John Hurst Adams for his life's task of doing the work of the Heavenly Father and being charitable to all citizens of the State; and

Whereas, it is with sadness that the members of the General Assembly learn that it is time for Bishop John Hurst Adams to move on and leave the Seventh Episcopal District for work in new locales and to do good for people other than his beloved South Carolinians. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly honor and commend Bishop John Hurst Adams, Senior Bishop, Seventh Episcopal District of the African Methodist Episcopal Church for his devoted service and invaluable contributions made to the church and to the citizens of this State and nation and to wish him well in his future endeavors.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Bishop John Hurst Adams.
