A CONCURRENT
RESOLUTION
COMMENDING CLAUDETTE HAZEL CHAPMAN CURETON
OF GREENVILLE COUNTY FOR HER DEDICATED AND
OUTSTANDING SERVICE TO GREENVILLE TECHNICAL
COLLEGE AND THE PUBLIC SCHOOL SYSTEM AND
WISHING HER SUCCESS AND HAPPINESS IN HER
RETIREMENT.
Whereas, Claudette Hazel Chapman Cureton was born in Greenville
County and was educated at the Chapman Grove High School,
where she was valedictorian; she graduated from Spelman College
with a BA degree in biology and psychology and holds a master's
degree in science from Fisk University; she also attended South
Carolina State University, A&T State University of North
Carolina, and North Carolina Central University; and she undertook
post graduate studies at Clemson University and the University of
South Carolina in Columbia; and
Whereas, on June 1, 1994, Mrs. Cureton retired as a biology
instructor at Greenville Technical College, where she taught from
1973-1994; and
Whereas, she also taught at North Warren High School in Wise,
North Carolina, and at Sterling, Beck, and Wade Hampton High
Schools in Greenville, South Carolina; and
Whereas, in 1967, Mrs. Cureton became the first high school
teacher to integrate the public schools in Greenville County; and
Whereas, she has received many prestigious awards over the years
for excellence in teaching and for her volunteer service to many
community organizations and activities; and
Whereas, from 1993 through 1995 she was listed in "Who's
Who in the South and Southeast" and in "Who's Who
in Science and Engineering"; and
Whereas, Mrs. Cureton was appointed to serve on the Greenville
County School District's Study Committee pertaining to
decentralization from District 25; and
Whereas, she organized an annual workshop involving the YWAs
and the Women's Auxiliary of the Reedy River Baptist Association
to study and work with "Issues That Affect Us". In
1993, the workshop was named "The Annual Claudette C.
Cureton Joint Workshop"; and
Whereas, she is also an active and dedicated churchwoman and
Third Vice President of the Women's Baptist E. & M.
Convention of South Carolina; and
Whereas, over the years, Mrs. Cureton has been highly respected by
her peers and colleagues, an outstanding wife and mother, a woman
busy attempting to make life better for others, and a genuine role
model who is emulated by other women in the religious, spiritual,
economic, and educational spheres; and
Whereas, Mrs. Cureton is a delightful and charming lady who is
admired and loved by all who know her, and the members of the
General Assembly are greatly pleased to have this opportunity to
honor such a distinguished individual. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate
concurring:
That the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this
resolution, commends Claudette Hazel Chapman Cureton of
Greenville County for her dedicated and outstanding service to
Greenville Technical College and the public school system and
wishes her success and happiness in her retirement.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to
Mrs. Cureton.
