A CONCURRENT
RESOLUTION
TO EXPRESS THE DEEPEST SYMPATHY OF THE MEMBERS
OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF SOUTH
CAROLINA TO THE FAMILY AND FRIENDS OF DR. ROY
JEFFERSON JOHNSON OF CAMDEN, SOUTH CAROLINA,
UPON HIS DEATH.
Whereas, the members of the General Assembly were deeply
saddened to learn of the death of Dr. Roy Jefferson Johnson on
Wednesday, January 17, 1996; and
Whereas, Dr. Johnson was born in Commerce, Texas, and was a
descendant of the original East Texas settlers; and
Whereas, he received his Bachelor of Arts degree from East Texas
State University, his Master of Arts degree from Columbia
University in New York, and his Doctorate degree from the
University of Texas at Austin; and
Whereas, Dr. Johnson was a former music supervisor in the Austin,
Texas public school system for many years, and also served as a
college professor and school supervisor; and
Whereas, he was a former concert artist in New York, Dallas, and
Austin and studied in New York with Pasquale Amato and Chase
Baromeo; and
Whereas, Dr. Johnson was a Paul Harris Fellow of Rotary
International, former President and charter member of Commerce
Rotary Club, former President of Austin Rotary Club, and a
member of Camden Rotary Club; and
Whereas, he maintained perfect attendance at all Rotary Club
functions for sixty-one years; and
Whereas, Dr. Johnson was Director of Ben Hur Shrine Chanters;
and
Whereas, he was former President of the Texas Music Educators
Association; and
Whereas, Dr. Johnson served as a Ruling Elder and member of
Bethesda Presbyterian Church; and
Whereas, the members of the General Assembly would like to
extend their sincere condolences to his wife, two daughters, and
other family and friends upon his death. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate
concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South
Carolina, by this resolution, express their deepest sympathy to the
family and friends of Dr. Roy Jefferson Johnson of Camden, South
Carolina, upon his death.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to
his wife, Mrs. Barbara Swatzell Johnson.
