A SENATE RESOLUTION TO CONGRATULATE AND THANK MR. BUCK MICKEL FOR FIFTY YEARS
OF LOYAL AND DEDICATED SERVICE TO THE FLUOR CORPORATION AND THE PEOPLE OF
SOUTH CAROLINA, UPON THE OCCASION OF HIS RETIREMENT.

A SENATE RESOLUTION
TO CONGRATULATE AND THANK MR. BUCK MICKEL FOR
FIFTY YEARS OF LOYAL AND DEDICATED SERVICE TO
THE FLUOR CORPORATION AND THE PEOPLE OF SOUTH
CAROLINA, UPON THE OCCASION OF HIS RETIREMENT.
Whereas, the members of the Senate have learned with deep regret
that Mr. Buck Mickel retired on December 31, 1997, after fifty years
of loyal and dedicated service to the Fluor Corporation; and
Whereas, Mr. Mickel, born in Elberton, Georgia on December 17,
1925, is the only child of James Clark and Reba Vaughn Mickel; and
Whereas, Mr. Mickel was educated in public schools at Elberton and
Atlanta, Georgia and was an honor graduate of Elberton High School
in 1942; and
Whereas, Mr. Mickel has had the undying love and respect of his
wife, former Minor Herndon of Elberton, Georgia and their three
children: Minor Mickel Shaw, Buck Alston Mickel and Charles Clark
Mickel, who are all outstanding individuals within their respective
communities; and
Whereas, Mr. Mickel received a bachelor of science degree in Civil
Engineering from Georgia Tech in 1947; and
Whereas, Mr. Mickel honorably served in the military including
World War II as a United States Maritime Academy Midshipman and
the Korean War as a First Lieutenant in Corps of Engineers; and
Whereas, Mr. Mickel began his remarkable career in 1948 with
Daniel Construction Company, later acquired by the Fluor
Corporation, in Greenville, South Carolina where he was soon
promoted to Project Manager; and
Whereas, Mr. Mickel was named Executive Vice President in 1960,
and upon the death of the founder, Charles E. Daniel, in 1964, he was
elected as President and General Manager of Daniel Construction
Company, appointed Chairman of Daniel International Corporation
in 1974 and a director of Fluor Corporation in 1977; and
Whereas, Mr. Mickel's wealth of knowledge and experience has
allowed him to become a great mentor and advisor to his friends and
former co-workers at Fluor and Daniel as well as public officials and
citizens across the state and around the nation; and
Whereas, Mr. Mickel is a true gentleman and is widely known as a
person who genuinely cares for all people regardless of race, color or
creed; and
Whereas, Mr. Mickel was awarded our state's highest honor, the
"Order of the Palmetto" by Governor James Edwards in 1977, and
was named South Carolina's "Businessman of the Year" in 1983; and
Whereas, Mr. Mickel is a selfless and devoted public servant who
serves as a Life Trustee of Clemson University, a trustee of Converse
College, a trustee of Brookgreen Gardens, a member of the Business
Council, a member of the Advisory Boards of the South Carolina
Foundation of Independent Colleges and the University of South
Carolina Business School; and
Whereas, Mr. Mickel's legacy of citizenship, family values, and
integrity serves as a true role model for future business and
community leaders; and
Whereas, Mr. Mickel has many other affiliations and associations,
both past and present, too numerous to mention in this resolution.
Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate:
That the members of the Senate of the state of South Carolina, by this
resolution, would like to publicly congratulate and thank Mr. Buck
Mickel for fifty years of loyal and dedicated service to the Fluor
Corporation and the people of South Carolina, upon the occasion of
his retirement.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to
Mr. Buck Mickel.
