BARTELL RYAN OF SUMTER COUNTY AND TO EXTEND DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HER FAMILY AND
MANY FRIENDS.

RESOLUTION
TO OFFER THE SINCERE CONDOLENCES OF THE MEMBERS
OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF SOUTH
CAROLINA UPON THE DEATH OF MRS. HARRIET BARTELL
RYAN OF SUMTER COUNTY AND TO EXTEND DEEPEST
SYMPATHY TO HER FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.
Whereas, the members of the General Assembly were saddened to
learn that Mrs. Harriet Bartell Ryan of Sumter County died on
Tuesday, January 27, 1998; and
Whereas, Mrs. Ryan was born in the Indiantown Community of
Williamsburg County and was the daughter of Arthur May McLeod
Bartell and the late John Scott Bartell; and
Whereas, the late Harriet Bartell Ryan is survived by her husband
James Hugh Ryan, Jr., State Forester of the South Carolina Forestry
Commission; son, James Hugh Ryan III of Columbia; daughters,
Rebecca Anne Ryan of Columbia, Amelia Ryan McMullan and Anna
Caroline Ryan, both of Atlanta; sister, Charlotte Bartell Swearingen
of Columbia; and grandchildren, William Maxwell McMullan II and
Ryan Wesley McMullan; and
Whereas, Mrs. Ryan was a graduate of the University of South
Carolina and was actively involved in the Wedgefield Presbyterian
Church, the DAR, and the Stateburg Literary and Musical Society.
Whereas, Mrs. Ryan also served as a volunteer at the Presbyterian
Home in Columbia and Covenant Place in Sumter; and
Whereas, Mrs. Ryan will always be remembered by her beloved
family and friends as an individual devoted to her family, church, and
community; and
Whereas, it is entirely fitting that her memory, numerous
contributions, and accomplishments will be honored for many years
to come; and
Whereas, we want James Hugh Ryan, Jr., and all of the rest of Harriet
Bartell Ryan's family and many friends to know that they are
uppermost in our thoughts and prayers. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives
concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South
Carolina offer sincere condolences upon the death of Mrs. Harriet
Bartell Ryan of Sumter County and to extend deepest sympathy to
her family and many friends.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to
Mr. James Hugh Ryan, Jr.
