A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO EXTEND THE SINCERE CONDOLENCES OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA SENATE TO THE FAMILY AND COUNTLESS FRIENDS OF ONE OF THE PALMETTO STATE'S MOST PROMINENT AND RESPECTED BUSINESSMEN, FORMER HIGHWAY COMMISSIONER JAMES HEBER SATCHER, SR., OF EDGEFIELD COUNTY.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate were deeply saddened to learn of the death of James Heber Satcher, Sr., a retired auto dealer and farmer, on Monday, May 11, 1998, at the Aiken Regional Medical Center at the age of eighty-eight; and

Whereas, Heber Satcher was born in Edgefleld County on September 28, 1909, and was the son of the late James W. and Ida Ripley Satcher; and

Whereas, Heber Satcher was a native of Johnston, South Carolina; He attended the University of South Carolina and graduated from The Citadel; and

Whereas, as a World War II Veteran, Heber Satcher served his country ably with the Strategic Forces Unit of the United States Navy from 1942-1945; and

Whereas, in 1949, Mr. Satcher purchased a Ford dealership in Johnston and in 1959, he became a Ford dealer in Aiken, where he remained until 1985; and

Whereas, Heber Satcher was a lifelong member of Johnston United Methodist Church; a member of the Aiken Rotary Club and as a Rotarian, he was a Paul Harris Fellow, one of the Rotary Club's highest honors; and a Shriner with the Almas Temple in Washington D.C.; and

Whereas, Heber Satcher was elected from the Eleventh Judicial Circuit to serve as a Highway Commissioner on the South Carolina Department of Highways and Public Transportation Commission, 1988-1991; and

Whereas, he is survived by two sons, James H. Satcher, Jr., of Johnston and Benjamin W. Satcher of Lexington; nine grandchildren, James H. Satcher III, Ben W. Satcher, Jr., Sissey S. Bynum, Lisa Smith, David S. Satcher, Robert C. Satcher, Sherry Carmean, Katie Satcher, and Bess Satcher; and nine great grandchildren; and

Whereas, through his intelligence, personality, ability, and vast experience in business and agriculture, he contributed greatly to the State of South Carolina; and

Whereas, Heber Satcher was a devoted public servant who gave his time, talents, and energy without hesitation for the betterment of the Town of Johnston and Edgefield County; and

Whereas, he was one of the last of the old masters, was a great friend, and was considered by all who knew him to be a man who loved both life and people; and

Whereas, we want his family and countless friends to know that they have our sincerest sympathy and are uppermost in our thoughts and prayers; and

Whereas, Heber Satcher's death has stunned and saddened the South Carolina Senate, and he will be deeply missed and mourned for many, many years. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, extend their sincere condolences to the family and countless friends of one of the Palmetto State's most prominent and respected businessmen, former Highway Commissioner James Heber Satcher, Sr., of Edgefield County.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to his family.
