A SENATE RESOLUTION TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH
CAROLINA SENATE UPON THE DEATH OF THE HONORABLE GILBERT E. MCMILLAN OF AIKEN
COUNTY, DISTINGUISHED FORMER MEMBER OF THE SENATE, AND TO EXTEND DEEPEST
SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.

A SENATE RESOLUTION
TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE MEMBERS
OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA SENATE UPON THE DEATH OF
THE HONORABLE GILBERT E. MCMILLAN OF AIKEN
COUNTY, DISTINGUISHED FORMER MEMBER OF THE
SENATE, AND TO EXTEND DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS
FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.
Whereas, the members of the Senate were deeply saddened to learn
of the death of the Honorable Gilbert E. McMillan of Aiken County
who died on May 27, 1998, and who served with distinction in the
South Carolina Senate from 1969 until his retirement in 1980; and
Whereas, he was born in Malvern, Arkansas, the son of the late
Daniel Morrison and Blanche Wilson McMillan; and
Whereas, Senator McMillan earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in
chemical engineering from Auburn University in Auburn, Alabama,
in 1936; and
Whereas, he came to Aiken County in 1953 to help the DuPont
Corporation start the nuclear reactors at the newly built Savannah
River Plant (now the Savannah River Site) and retired from DuPont
as a chemical engineer with thirty-three years of service, was the area
superintendent of the L Reactor for many years, and held several
responsible positions on the Manhattan Project at the United States
nuclear facility in Hanford, Washington; and
Whereas, Senator McMillan was affectionately known as one of the
great Cold War patriots and a good friend to many people; and
Whereas, he was a faithful member of All Saints Anglican Church,
the Elks Lodge, and Scabbard and Blade and Blue Key National
Honor Societies; and
Whereas, Senator McMillan is survived by his wife, Janet Tyrrell
McMillan, a daughter, Paula McFadden, four grandchildren, and
three great-grandchildren; and
Whereas, we want the family and the many friends of the Honorable
Gilbert Edward McMillan to know that they are uppermost in our
thoughts and prayers and have our deepest sympathy and love. Now,
therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate:
That the members of the Senate, by this resolution, express profound
sorrow at the death of the Honorable Gilbert Edward McMillan of
Aiken County, distinguished member of the Senate, and extend
deepest sympathy to his wonderful family and many friends.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to
his wife, Mrs. Janet Tyrrell McMillan.
