A CONCURRENT
RESOLUTION
TO REQUEST THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION TO
NAME A PORTION OF INTERSTATE HIGHWAY 85 IN
SPARTANBURG COUNTY FROM MILE POINT 68.8 TO MILE
POINT 77.4 THE "JOE GRIFFIN EXPRESSWAY".
Whereas, Joel R. "Joe" Griffin, Jr., was born in Marion, Virginia in
1930; and
Whereas, Joe is a graduate of Spartanburg High School in
Spartanburg County; and
Whereas, he served as a South Carolina Highway Commissioner
from April, 1980 to April, 1984; and
Whereas, Joe has served on the Spartanburg Area Transportation
Committee and the Spartanburg County Planning Commission; and
Whereas, he is a former director of the Spartanburg County Red
Cross and the Spartanburg County Childrens Shelter; and
Whereas, Joe currently is a member of the Board of Visitors of the
University of South Carolina Medical School, the Greater
Spartanburg Area Chamber of Commerce, and the American Metals
Society; and
Whereas, it is fitting and proper that the portion of Interstate
Highway 85 from the mile point 68.8 to mile point 77.4 in
Spartanburg County be named the "Joe Griffin Expressway" as a
lasting tribute to this distinguished South Carolinian. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate
concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly request that the
Department of Transportation designate and name the portion of
Interstate Highway 85 in Spartanburg County described in this
resolution as the "Joe Griffin Expressway" and to install five feet by
eight feet signs along the highway containing the words "Joe Griffin
Expressway".
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to
the Department of Transportation.
