 SUMTER COUNTY ON HIS DEATH AND EXTENDING THEIR DEEPEST APPRECIATION FOR HIS
 YEARS OF SERVICE TO HIS COMMUNITY AND TO THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA.

EXPRESSING THE SINCEREST SYMPATHY OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA GENERAL ASSEMBLY TO THE FAMILY AND FRIENDS OF SAMUEL ARDEN BENSON OF SUMTER COUNTY ON HIS DEATH AND EXTENDING THEIR DEEPEST APPRECIATION FOR HIS YEARS OF SERVICE TO HIS COMMUNITY AND TO THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA.

Whereas, Samuel Arden Benson, Sumter accountant and former University of South Carolina trustee, died March 16, 1997; and

Whereas, Sam Benson was born in Hartsville, South Carolina, a son of the late Martin Luther Benson and Annie Ingram Benson; and

Whereas, he is survived by his wife Mildred Gore Benson; three sons, Samuel Arden Benson, Jr., of Atlanta, Robert Luther Benson of Sumter, and Donald Walter Benson of Columbia; a daughter, Pam McDowell of Columbia; two sisters, Sally Coleman of Florence and Willie Mae Driggers of Hartsville; and five grandchildren; and

Whereas, Sam was a charter member of Alice Drive Baptist Church, a graduate of the University of South Carolina, and a first lieutenant in the United States Army during World War II; and

Whereas, he was a partner in the Sumter accounting firm of Benson, Bultman, King, and Palmer. An avid Gamecock fan and a strong advocate of improved education, he served as a trustee of the University of South Carolina board from 1982 to 1990. He was also a former member of the University of South Carolina Sumter Board and a former member of the Sumter City-County Planning Commission; and

Whereas, he also served his community as a former chairman of the Sumter County American Cancer Society, president of the Sumter County Gamecock Club, director of the First Federal Savings and Loan of South Carolina Board, and a member of the Sumter County Commission for Higher Education, the United Way, the Sumter-Shaw Community Council, and the Lions Club. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina expresses its sincerest sympathy to the friends and family of Samuel Arden Benson of Sumter County on his death and extends their deepest appreciation for his contributions to his community and to this State.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mrs. Mildred Gore Benson.
