A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
EXPRESSING SORROW AT THE DEATH OF LIEUTENANT
COLONEL DORCAS JUDSON ELLEDGE, UNITED STATES
ARMY NURSING CORPS (RETIRED), AND EXTENDING
SYMPATHY TO HER FAMILY AND FRIENDS.
Whereas, Lieutenant Colonel Dorcas Judson Elledge, United States
Army Nursing Corps (Retired), died March 3, 1997 at the age of
seventy-four; and
Whereas, she was born in Laurens County; she graduated high school
at Mt. Berry School for Girls in Rome, Georgia, and attended Berry
College for two years prior to enrolling in nursing school at Ford
Hospital in Detroit, Michigan, from which she graduated and
received her R.N. degree; and
Whereas, she retired from the United States Army Nursing Corps as
the Supervisor of Medical Surgery; she served on the board of
directors for the Mid-Carolina Mental Health Association and
received the Distinguished Service Award in 1990 -- the association's
highest honor; she received the Hettie Ricket Award, a statewide
award given for her assistance in community development; she
served as president of the Ridgewood Monticello Neighborhood
Association in Richland County and was second vice president of
Eau Claire Community Council in Columbia; the library of the
Ensor-Keenan House in Eau Claire was dedicated in her honor for her
community service; in 1995, the South Carolina House of
Representatives honored her for her service, and the Columbia City
Council declared January 18, 1995 "Dorcas Elledge Day"; she
received the Hyatt Park Association Inspirational Community
Activities Award in 1994 and received several Columbia Council of
Neighborhoods service awards; she served on the Columbia City
Council's Citizen's Advisory Committee and the Columbia
Community Relations Council; and
Whereas, she was a Methodist and attended Eau Claire Presbyterian
Church in Columbia and Ware Shoals First Presbyterian Church; she
was a daughter of the late Samuel Earl, Sr. and Bernice Rush Elledge;
surviving are a brother, Samuel Earl Elledge, Jr., of Little Mountain,
and four sisters, Lillee E. Schuster of Hanahan, Linda E. Mann of
Clemson, Wanda E. Moye of Ware Shoals, and Jane E. Hopf of San
Diego, California; and
Whereas, Lieutenant Colonel Dorcas Elledge was an outstanding
individual who was devoted to her nation, her State, and her
community; she gave freely of her time, talents, energy, and
resources to numerous worthy causes; she made a positive impact on
everyone who knew her; she was admired and beloved, and her
presence will be greatly missed. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate
concurring:
That the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this
resolution, expresses sorrow at the death of Lieutenant Colonel
Dorcas Judson Elledge, United States Army Nursing Corps (Retired),
and extends sympathy to her family and friends.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to
Lieutenant Colonel Elledge's family.
