COUNTY FOR HIS MANY YEARS OF OUTSTANDING PUBLIC SERVICE AND WISHING HIM MUCH
HAPPINESS UPON HIS RETIREMENT AS CHIEF MAGISTRATE FOR THE CITY OF COLUMBIA.

RESOLUTION
COMMENDING THE HONORABLE WALTER JONES OF
RICHLAND COUNTY FOR HIS MANY YEARS OF
OUTSTANDING PUBLIC SERVICE AND WISHING HIM MUCH
HAPPINESS UPON HIS RETIREMENT AS CHIEF
MAGISTRATE FOR THE CITY OF COLUMBIA.
Whereas, The Honorable Walter Jones was born in Eufaula,
Alabama, and graduated from Van Buren High School; and
Whereas, he attended Texas Central State College, the University of
Maryland, the National Judicial College at the University of Nevada
(Reno), and the American Academy of Judicial Education; and
Whereas, Judge Jones served as a constable from 1971-75 and as
magistrate for the City of Columbia from September 1, 1976, to
January 1, 1998; and
Whereas, he has received numerous honors and awards, including a
United States Army Commendation, Korean Service Medal, Vietnam
Service and Campaign Medals, a National Defense Service Medal,
the Bronze Star, and Good Conduct Medal; and
Whereas, Judge Jones has served on many prestigious organizations
including the National Judges Association, Governor's Committee on
Highway Safety, Board of Directors of the Boys and Girls Clubs of
Greater Columbia, Inc., the Board of the United Way, the American
Judges Association, Richland County Magistrate's Association, the
Masons, Capital City Lodge No. 47, Veterans of Foreign Wars,
Townsmen Club, Board of Commissioners on Judiciary Standards,
McCants Elementary School Advisory Board, Court Administration
Advisory Board, Bethlehem Baptist Church Board Chairman, and
Fort Jackson Federal Credit Union Board of Directors; and
Whereas, it is with deep and sincere regret that the members of the
General Assembly have learned of his retirement as Chief Magistrate
for the City of Columbia; and
Whereas, his talent, abilities, commitment, hard work, and devotion
to public law merit him special recognition. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate
concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly hereby commend The
Honorable Walter Jones for his many years of outstanding service to
the public and wish him much happiness following his retirement as
Chief Magistrate for the City of Columbia.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to
The Honorable Walter Jones.
