SENIOR BISHOP OF THE AFRICAN METHODIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH, AND CELEBRATING HIS
TWENTY-FIVE YEARS OF EPISCOPAL LEADERSHIP AND FIFTY YEARS OF MINISTRY.

RESOLUTION
RECOGNIZING THE RIGHT REVEREND JOHN HURST
ADAMS, SENIOR BISHOP OF THE AFRICAN METHODIST
EPISCOPAL CHURCH, AND CELEBRATING HIS
TWENTY-FIVE YEARS OF EPISCOPAL LEADERSHIP AND
FIFTY YEARS OF MINISTRY.
Whereas, the Right Reverend John Hurst Adams, Senior Bishop of
the African Methodist Episcopal Church, has been serving the
Seventh Episcopal District, the South Carolina area, since 1992; and
Whereas, he is a South Carolina native, having been born in
Columbia to the Reverend and Mrs. E. A. Adams; and
Whereas, his ministry began fifty years ago as a student pastor in
Massachusetts; and
Whereas, he pursued his study of theology at Boston University
School of Theology and Harvard University's Union Theological
Seminary; and
Whereas, his long tenure of Episcopal leadership includes terms as
professor of theology at Payne Theological Seminary, Wilberforce
University; president of Paul Quinn College in Waco, Texas; pastor
of A.M.E. congregations in Seattle, Washington, and Los Angeles,
California; and Bishop of the Episcopal Districts of the Texas,
Mid-Atlantic, and Georgia areas before coming to our State; and
Whereas, his far-reaching ministry has included service as chairman
of the boards of Allen University, Turner Theological Seminary,
Morris Brown College, and Atlanta University Center; service on the
Board of the Atlanta Committee on Olympic Games; and founder of
the Congress of National Black Churches and Executive Management
Training for Black Church Leaders; and
Whereas, he currently serves the people of South Carolina as a
member of the Palmetto Project, South Carolina Community
Development and Voter Education Project, and South Carolina
Christian Action Council; and
Whereas, he has been honored numerous times for his service to God
and to humanity, including Africare Award for Outstanding
Leadership, Ebony Magazine Great Black Preacher, Barton
University Distinguished Alumni Award, and Order of the Palmetto;
and
Whereas, the Right Reverend Adams will be honored again on
February 6 and 7, 1998, in North Charleston by the Seventh
Episcopal District of the African Methodist Episcopal Church, as the
district celebrates his many years of ministry and leadership. Now,
therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate
concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South
Carolina recognize the Right Reverend John Hurst Adams, Senior
Bishop of the African Methodist Episcopal Church, and celebrate his
twenty-five years of Episcopal leadership and fifty years of ministry.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to
the Right Reverend John Hurst Adams.
