RESOLUTION
RECOGNIZING AND SALUTING HARRY T. HARVIN, D.D.S.,
OF SUMTER COUNTY FOR HIS OUTSTANDING CAREER OF
SERVICE AND EXTENDING BEST WISHES TO HIM UPON HIS
RETIREMENT.
Whereas, Harry T. Harvin, D.D.S., was born in Manning on May 22,
1916; he was educated at Presbyterian College in Clinton, where he
was an officer of the student body, President of Kappa Alpha Order,
President of the Interfraternity Council, and a member of the state
champion baseball team; and
Whereas, he was awarded the degree of "Doctor of Dental Surgery"
from Atlanta Southern Dental College (Emory University) in June of
1941 and served in the United States Navy from April 22, 1942
through the end of World War II, serving in Guam; and
Whereas, Dr. Harvin served on the dental staff of Tuomey Regional
Hospital in Sumter ever since returning from World War II; and
Whereas, Dr. Harvin served on the State Board of Dental Examiners
from 1958 to 1962; he is a South Carolina Dental Association life
member, an American Dental Association life member, and a life
member of the Sumter Rotary Club, of which he previously served as
president; and
Whereas, he is a member and past president of the Sunset Country
Club and has served as civilian member of the Sumter-Shaw
Community Council; and
Whereas, he is a member of First Presbyterian Church of Sumter and
is an elder emeritus; he is a former Sunday School Superintendent, a
former deacon and Moderator of the Diaconate, a former Clerk of the
Session, and a former Moderator of New Harmony Presbytery; and
Whereas, he was in private general dentistry in Sumter from 1946
until his retirement on December 31, 1997; and
Whereas, Dr. Harry T. Harvin has had an outstanding career of
service to the citizens of Sumter County; he is highly respected and
admired for his professionalism; he is devoted to his church; and he
has always put the needs of others ahead of his own; he is a true
humanitarian to whom the citizens of his county will always be
indebted; and
Whereas, we are pleased to have the opportunity to recognize such a
remarkable, giving individual in this special way. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate
concurring:
That the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this
resolution, recognizes and salutes Harry T. Harvin, D.D.S. of Sumter
County for his outstanding career of service and extends best wishes
to him upon his retirement.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to
Dr. Harvin.
