A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO EXPRESS SORROW AT THE DEATH OF DR. AUGUSTA BAKER ALEXANDER OF COLUMBIA AND TO EXTEND SYMPATHY TO HER FAMILY AND FRIENDS.

Whereas, Dr. Augusta Baker Alexander of Columbia died February 23, 1998 at the age of eighty-six; and

Whereas, known professionally as Dr. Baker, she was a well-known and highly respected retired educator, author, and master storyteller; and

Whereas, Dr. Baker was born in Baltimore, Maryland, and retired in 1974 as Coordinator of Children's Services from the New York Public Library; she moved to Columbia in 1980 and retired June 30, 1994 from the University of South Carolina after ten years as storyteller-in-residence; the "Baker's Dozen" storytelling festival at the Richland County Public Library bore her name as a testimonial to her abilities and contributions to storytelling; and

Whereas, she was awarded honorary doctorates from St. John's University and the University of South Carolina and received numerous other awards and honors for her services and contributions to children's literature both nationally and abroad, especially in the area of African-American interest; and

Whereas, she was a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and Northminster Presbyterian Church of Columbia; and

Whereas, Dr. Baker was an outstanding individual and a compassionate and gracious lady; she was widely admired and loved and will be greatly missed. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, expresses sorrow at the death of Dr. Augusta Baker Alexander of Columbia and extends sympathy to her family and friends.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Dr. Baker's family.
