Whereas, the members of the General Assembly are deeply stunned and saddened to learn of the death of Major General Robert Bailey Solomon, on Sunday, March 29, 1998, at the young age of sixty-seven; and

Whereas, Robert B. Solomon was born December 14, 1930, in Baltimore, Maryland, and was the son of Sylvia Rochkind Solomon and the late Abraham Solomon; and

Whereas, General Solomon initially began his outstanding military career by serving in the Marine Corps Reserves from 1947-1950 before enlisting in the Army in 1951. Upon his graduation from OCS at Fort Knox on November 22, 1952, he was commissioned a Second Lieutenant of Armor; and

Whereas, General Solomon graduated from the University of Maryland with a Bachelor of Science Degree; earned his Master of Science Degree in Adult Education from John Hopkins University, and an Associates Degree in Pre-Law from the University of Baltimore. He was the distinguished Army graduate of the 1975 class at the National War College; and

Whereas, General Solomon's early service involved assignments with Artillery Armor, Engineer, and Armored Infantry units. He commanded a Tank Company in Germany, an Aerial Surveillance Detachment at Fort Knox, a Basic Training Battalion at Fort Bragg, and a Tank Battalion again in Germany. He is a former member of the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment; 1st and 2nd Battalion of the 33rd Armor; 1st Battalion of the 35th Armor; and 4th Battalion of the 37th Armor. He has instructed at the Armor School and Army Information School; and

Whereas, General Solomon was a veteran of both Korea and Vietnam. During his thirty-six years in the military, he was awarded the Army Commendation Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Legion of Merit, Defense Superior Service Award, and two awards of the Army Distinguished Service Medal. Upon his retirement, he received the coveted Order of Aaron and Hur for his contributions supporting the spiritual dimension of military life; and

Whereas, the General served his last ten years as Chief of Public Affairs of the Army, Deputy of the Pacific Command, Deputy Inspector General of the Army, and Commander of Fort Jackson; and

Whereas, following his illustrious career in the military, General Solomon served as Vice President for Institutional Advancement at Benedict College; was associated with the United Way of the Midlands and with the Columbia Philharmonic Orchestra; and

Whereas, a voice student at Peabody Conservatory, General Solomon was tenor soloist in his synagogue's choir for many years. He chanted High Holiday Services at the Beth Shalom Synagogue in Columbia for the past ten years. He was an avid skier, but his favorite pastime was videotaping his grandchildren's activities. General Solomon was active in raising funds for the chapel at West Point; and

Whereas, he is survived by his wife, Frances Nathanson Solomon of Columbia; son, Eric Solomon of Annandale, Virginia; daughters, Sharon Jacobs and Leah Cherney, both of Columbia; his mother of Baltimore; brothers, Charles M. Whereas, the General will long be admired by the many people whose lives were touched by his tender, caring manner of life for all; and

Whereas, General Solomon's death represents a tremendous loss to Richland County, and in truth, the State of South Carolina, and we want the members of his family and many friends to know that they are in our uppermost thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
