A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

COMMENDING DR. W. F. GIBSON OF GREENVILLE FOR HIS MANY YEARS OF OUTSTANDING SERVICE TO THE COMMUNITY AND THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA.

Whereas, William Frank Gibson, D.D.S., of Greenville was born in Darlington, graduated from Mayo High School of that city, attended Allen University in Columbia, earned a B.S. degree in biology from North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro, was awarded the Doctor of Dental Surgery degree by Meharry Medical College School of Dentistry in Nashville College School of Dentistry in Nashville, Tennessee, and interned in oral surgery at Harlem Hospital in New York City; and

Whereas, Dr. Gibson has been engaged in the private practice of general dentistry in the City of Greenville for many years; and

Whereas, he has demonstrated superb leadership over the years by his past service to the community and the State in numerous capacities, including the following: Chairman, South Carolina Human Relations Committee; Chairman, Voter Education Project, South Carolina; Chairman, Black Council for Progress, Greenville; Chairman, Mayor's Human Relations Committee, Greenville; Chairman, Greenville Education Committee, Incorporated; Chairman, South Carolina Advisory Committee to the United States Commission on Civil Rights; President, United Methodist Men, John Wesley United Methodist Church; board member, Greenville Technical Education College; President, Greenville Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP); Second Vice President and First Vice President of the South Carolina Conference of Branches of the NAACP; member, State Human Affairs Commission; board member, State Alston Wilkes Society; Polemarch of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Greenville-Spartanburg Alumni Chapter, life member; 1976 Deputy Director, Carter-Mondale South Carolina Election Campaign; South Carolina Delegate to the Democratic National Conventions of 1968, 1976, and 1988; and member, Governor's Task Force on Critical Human Needs; and

Whereas, he has received the Jefferson Award and the Order of the Palmetto; and

Whereas, his current leadership activities include his dedicated service as: President, South Carolina Conference of Branches of the NAACP; Chairman of the National Board of Directors of the NAACP; member, Tuscon Lodge No. 21, M.W. Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Greenville and Accepted Masons of South Carolina; member, Azah Temple No. 140 Mystic Shrine; President, NAACP Economic Development Corporation (N.E.O.C.O.), Hartford, Connecticut; member, John Wesley United Methodist Church; member, National Alliance of Business, Board of Directors, Southeast Region; and member, American Association of Blacks in Energy, Board of Directors; and

Whereas, Dr. Gibson has touched the lives of countless persons; he is a leader, a man of vision, faith, and hope, and a respected professional; he has meant much to the citizens of Greenville and of the entire Palmetto State for many years; and he is widely and deeply admired for his dedication, service, and compassion; and

Whereas, he will be fittingly and justly honored by friends and admirers at a recognition dinner on August 22, 1998, in Greenville at the Hyatt Hotel; and

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly are truly pleased to have the opportunity to accord this distinguished South Carolinian special recognition and honor by this resolution. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina commends Dr. W.F. Gibson of Greenville for his many years of outstanding service to the community and the State.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Dr. Gibson.
