 ASSEMBLY TO THE FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS OF THE LATE GEORGE C. JAMES, SR., OF
 SUMTER.

EXPRESSING THE SYMPATHY OF THE MEMBERS OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY TO THE FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS OF THE LATE GEORGE C. JAMES, SR., OF SUMTER.

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly note that George Coggin James, Sr., of Sumter died July 2, 1999; and

Whereas, George James was born in Summerton and educated in the schools there and enrolled at the Citadel, where he was named company commander, battalion commander, and distinguished military graduate. While at the Citadel he served as the rear guide of the Summerall Guard and for his leadership ability was awarded on graduation the John O. Wilson Ring, given to the senior cadet by his classmates as the manliest, purest, and most courteous member of the class; and

Whereas, his devotion to the Citadel was such that he served on its Board of Visitors from 1974 to 1992, elected as vice chairman in 1978 and elected chairman in 1981, a post he held for six years, and The Association of Citadel Men named him its Man of the Year in 1985; and

Whereas, George James earned his law degree at the University of South Carolina, and had a distinguished career at the bar, valued by his friends and colleagues as a man of his word, a gentleman, absolutely honorable and trustworthy, who served his clients with those qualities and by always being superbly prepared; and

Whereas, he served his country as a judge advocate general in the United States Air Force from 1952 to 1960 and in the Air Force Reserve, retiring as a lieutenant colonel with twenty-eight years service and served his community with his legal skills as a judge of the Sumter Recorder's Court; and

Whereas, his dedication to community activities saw him serve as vice commander and as a member of Sumter American Legion Post 15, as former president of the Sumter Citadel Club, and as a founding member of the Wilson Hall School board of trustees, on which he served as chairman for the school's first seven years of operation; and

Whereas, it is appropriate for the members of the General Assembly to pause in their deliberations so that they might honor the memory of so distinguished a son of South Carolina and extend their sympathy to his family and many friend at his loss. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly express their sympathy to the family and many friends of the late George C. James, Sr., of Sumter.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mrs. George C. James, Sr.
