 A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING THE HONORABLE PETER BEATTIE, PREMIER OF
 THE STATE OF QUEENSLAND, AUSTRALIA, AND WELCOMING HIM TO THE STATE OF SOUTH
 CAROLINA DURING HIS VISIT OF MAY 11-12, 1999.

RECOGNIZING THE HONORABLE PETER BEATTIE, PREMIER OF THE STATE OF QUEENSLAND, AUSTRALIA, AND WELCOMING HIM TO THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA DURING HIS VISIT OF MAY 11-12, 1999.

Whereas, the Honorable Peter Beattie served as the Australian Labor Party's State Secretary from 1980 to 1988; he was the Labor Party's State Campaign Director for sixteen different elections and served on many key party committees and delegations; and

Whereas, he was elected to the Australian State of Queensland Parliament as the Member from Brisbane Central on December 2, 1989; he chaired the Criminal Justice Committee from 1990 to 1992 and served on a number of other committees; he was appointed Minister for Health in the Goss Labor Government on July 31, 1995 and held this position until February 19, 1996, when government was transferred following a by-election; and

Whereas, Mr. Beattie was elected Leader of the Opposition on February 19, 1996 and became the Shadow Minister for Economic and Trade Development on February 27, 1996; and

Whereas, a general election was held in Queensland on June 13, 1998, and the Australian Labor Party won forty-four of the eighty-nine available seats, falling one seat short of a majority; on June 25, 1998, Nicklin Independent Peter Wellington confirmed his support to Mr. Bettie, thus allowing the Australian Labor Party to form a government; and

Whereas, Mr. Beattie was sworn in as Premier on June 25, 1998, and his cabinet was sworn in four days later; and

Whereas, Mr. Beattie, born in Sydney, Australia in 1952, holds a B.A. degree and an L.L.B. degree from the University of Queensland and an M. A. (Research) degree from the University of Queensland; before being elected to Parliament, he was a solicitor; he is a member of various professional and community clubs and associations and is the author of two books; and

Whereas, Premier Beattie is scheduled to be in Columbia on May 11-12, 1999 to sign a memoranda of understanding for trade and economic development and sister-state relationship; and

Whereas, we are delighted to have Premier Beattie with us, and he greatly honors us by his visit. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, recognize the Honorable Peter Beattie, Premier of the State of Queensland, Australia, and heartily welcome him to the State of South Carolina during his visit of May 11-12, 1999.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Premier Beattie.
