 ASSEMBLY AT THE DEATH OF GEORGE COGGIN JAMES, SR., SUMTER ATTORNEY AND
 SUMMERTON NATIVE, AND EXTENDING DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND MANY
 FRIENDS.

EXPRESSING THE SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY AT THE DEATH OF GEORGE COGGIN JAMES, SR., SUMTER ATTORNEY AND SUMMERTON NATIVE, AND EXTENDING DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.

Whereas, George Coggin James, Sr., died Friday, July 2, 1999, at the age of seventy-one; and

Whereas, Colonel James, a native of Summerton, was a Sumter attorney known, respected, and admired across the Palmetto State for his superb legal knowledge and expertise; and

Whereas, he rendered dedicated service to The Citadel, his undergraduate alma mater, and was a beloved member of The Citadel family; and

Whereas, Colonel James was born in Summerton in Clarendon County on December 24, 1927; in 1945, he graduated from Summerton High School and enrolled at The Citadel; he received many honors and awards at The Citadel and, upon graduation, was presented the prestigious John O. Willson Ring; and

Whereas, he served on The Citadel's Board of Visitors from 1974 to 1992, being elected board vice chairman in 1978 and chairman in 1981, a position he held for six years; and

Whereas, the Association of Citadel Men named him Man of the Year in 1985; and

Whereas, he received his law degree from the University of South Carolina School of Law; he also had a distinguished career with the United States Air Force, where he served as a judge advocate general from 1952 to 1960, and the Air Force Reserve; he retired as a lieutenant colonel with twenty-eight years of service; and

Whereas, Colonel James was a former judge of the Sumter Recorder's Court and former president of the Sumter Citadel Club; he also served as vice commander and a member of Sumter American Legion Post 15; and

Whereas, he was a founding member of the Wilson Hall School board of trustees and served as the board's chairman during the first seven years of the school's operation; and

Whereas, a recipient of The Order of the Palmetto, he was also a fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers and a member of the American Board of Trial Advocates; and

Whereas, George Coggin James, Sr., was an outstanding individual who rendered excellent service over a lengthy period to many persons, organizations, and institutions; he was devoted to his community and his State, as well as to his family, church, and countless friends; it is truly an understatement to say that he will be missed, inasmuch as his talent and service are irreplaceable. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, express profound sorrow at the death of George Coggin James, Sr., Sumter attorney and Summerton native, and extend deepest sympathy to his family and many friends.

Be it further resolved that copies of this resolution be forwarded to Colonel James' family, the members of the Board of Visitors of The Citadel, the President of The Citadel, and Mr. Fred Moulton, Headmaster of Wilson Hall School of Sumter.
