A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

REQUESTING THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION TO NAME THE CAROLINA BAYS PARKWAY THE JOHN B. SINGLETON PARKWAY TO HONOR THE MEMORY OF THE LATE JOHN B. SINGLETON OF MYRTLE BEACH FOR HIS UNMATCHED CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE CITY OF MYRTLE BEACH AND THE GRAND STRAND AND HIS VISION AND PERSISTENCE IN PROMOTING THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE .CAROLINA BAYS PARKWAY.

Whereas, John B. Singleton was born March 14, 1932, and grew up in Myrtle Beach; and

Whereas, he was graduated from the University of South Carolina School of Pharmacy in 1954; and

Whereas, he was a member of the Myrtle Beach Jaycees from 1957-1961, and was named by that chapter as the "Young Man of the Year" in 1960, the same year he served as the first chairman of the "Miss Sun Fun USA" Beauty Pageant; and

Whereas, he served from 1966-1974 on Myrtle Beach City Council, both as Mayor Pro Tem and Police Commissioner during both terms; and

Whereas, he worked fifty years in independent retail pharmacy as part owner of Walgreen's in Myrtle Beach and owner of Northside Pharmacy, Southside Pharmacy, Professional Mall Pharmacy, Medical Plaza Pharmacy, and Northside Healthcare, all in Myrtle Beach; and

Whereas, he was an organizer of the Grand Strand Pharmaceutical Association, member of the National Association of Retail Druggists, and the South Carolina Pharmaceutical Association, where he served on legislative committees and networks; and

Whereas, his personal dedication to improving Myrtle Beach extended far beyond elective office as evidenced by his active membership in First United Methodist Church, chairmanship of the City Heart Fund Drive, and volunteerism with the March of Dimes, Tara Hall, and many other charitable efforts; and

.Whereas, he was active in the Myrtle Beach Hospitality Association, a founder of Anchor Bank, Chairman of the Myrtle Beach Downtown Redevelopment Commission, on the Board of the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce, and named its Citizen of the Year in 1992 for his diligent work for funding of the Carolina Bays Parkway and his many other community commitments; and

Whereas, he served as Chairman of the Carolina Bays Parkway Task Force, a group of local citizens dedicated to constructing a new hurricane evacuation route; and

Whereas, his untimely death in January, 1995, was an unmeasurable loss to his community and State; and

Whereas, it is appropriate for the members of the General Assembly to pause in their deliberations so that they might recommend to the Department of Transportation that the vision of John Singleton, the Carolina Bays Parkway, bear the name of this distinguished son of South Carolina, and in so doing honor his memory and express their appreciation for his lifelong service to his community and State Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina request the Department of Transportation to name the Carolina Bays Parkway the John B. Singleton Parkway to honor the memory of this distinguished South Carolinian and to erect appropriate signs or markers to implement this designation.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Department of Transportation, the family of the late John B. Singleton, and the mayor and council of the City of Myrtle Beach.
