A HOUSE RESOLUTION

EXPRESSING THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA GENERAL ASSEMBLY UPON THE DEATH OF MR. BEN STERN OF RICHLAND COUNTY AND EXTENDING DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly were deeply saddened to learn of the death of Mr. Ben Stern of Richland County, who died on December 6, 1999; and

Whereas, Mr. Stern, born in Kielce, Poland, was the son of the late Chaim Hillel and Chaya Hadassah Fellman Stern, the devoted husband of Jadzia Sklar Stern, and the father of four successful children; and

Whereas, he was a co-owner of Stern & Stern Associates and a former owner of Ben Stern Construction Company; and

Whereas, in the 1960's, Mr. Stern was honored as Home Builder of the Year; and

Whereas, he was a Mason and a Shriner, and served on the Board of Directors of Newberry College and as a consultant with Columbia College on Holocaust Studies; and

Whereas, Mr. Stern served on the Board of Directors and as President of Beth Shalom Synagogue, and was a member of the Columbia Country Club and the Columbia Jewish Community Center; and

Whereas, as Holocaust survivors, he and his wife were active speakers on the Holocaust throughout South Carolina; and

Whereas, as a Holocaust survivor and community leader, he was adamant in his love for mankind and was very outspoken that no group of people would ever be singled out and persecuted as the Jews were during this horrible period of time; and

Whereas, Mr. Stern will forever be remembered for his commitment to religious freedom and human rights; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives want Mr. Stern's family and many friends to know that they are uppermost in their thoughts and have the members' deepest sympathy. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, express profound sorrow upon the death of Mr. Ben Stern, of Richland County, and extend deepest sympathy to his family and many friends.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mr. Stern's widow, Mrs. Jadzia Sklar Stern.
