 EXCEPTIONAL DEVOTION TO HER CHURCH, FAMILY, AND MANY FRIENDS.

A HOUSE RESOLUTION

RECOGNIZING AND COMMENDING MRS. LENA E. MAYERS OF COLUMBIA, ON THE OCCASION OF THE FIRST MOTHER'S DAY OF THE NEW MILLENNIUM, FOR HER EXCEPTIONAL DEVOTION TO HER CHURCH, FAMILY, AND MANY FRIENDS.

Whereas, Mrs. Lena E. Mayers was born on January 10, 1920, in Columbia, South Carolina, the daughter of Amelia and Milledge Kemp; and

Whereas, a product of the Barnwell/Henderson Street Community, she was educated in the Columbia area schools and attended Booker T. Washington High School in Columbia; and

Whereas, Mrs. Mayers joined New Ebenezer Baptist Church when she was sixteen years old and has been a devoted member of this congregation for the past sixty-four years; and

Whereas, as a member of New Ebenezer Baptist Church, she serves as "Mother of the Church", is a member of the Willing Workers Club, Jubilee Choir, Naomi Missionary Society, the Deaconess Board, and is a founding member of the Den Mothers and Fathers; and

Whereas, as an active member of her community, she participates in the Waverly Community and the Senior Citizens Clubs in the Liberty Hill Community; and

Whereas, Mrs. Mayers has been a member of the Cleopatra Chapter, #240, Order of the Eastern Star for over forty -five years and has held a number of official positions within the organization; and

Whereas, she is the widow of Robert Mayers and together they bore five children of which two are deceased. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, hereby recognize and commend Mrs. Lena E. Mayers of Columbia, on the occasion of the first Mother's Day of the New Millennium, for her exceptional devotion to her church, family, and many friends.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Mrs. Mayers.
