 A SENATE RESOLUTION TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH
 CAROLINA SENATE UPON THE DEATH OF J. KENNETH RENTIERS OF CHARLESTON, AND
 EXTEND THEIR DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.

TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA SENATE UPON THE DEATH OF J. KENNETH RENTIERS OF CHARLESTON, AND EXTEND THEIR DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.

Whereas, the members of the Senate are saddened to learn of the death of a friend, colleague, and former State Senator, J. Kenneth Rentiers, age 74, who died Saturday, June 16, 2001 in Charleston. The husband of Kathryn Gianatos Rentiers, Mr. Rentiers, was an accomplished attorney and a distinguished and highly respected member of the Charleston bar; and

Whereas, born in Charleston on March 11, 1927, Mr. Rentiers was the son of the late John Whalen Rentiers and Estelle Simmons Rentiers. He graduated from Charleston High School, the College of Charleston, and the University of South Carolina School of Law; and

Whereas, Mr. Rentiers practiced law for fifty years on Broad Street. He also was vice president of Gray Line Sightseeing Tour Company for twenty-five years. He served as President of the Charleston Bar Association and was a member of the American Bar Association, the South Carolina Bar Association, the South Carolina Trial Lawyers Association, and the American Judicature Society; and

Whereas, Mr. Rentiers served the City of Charleston as Municipal Judge and as Special Corporation Counsel. He was elected to the State Senate in 1968 and was a member of the Judiciary Committee. He also served as a Special Circuit Court Judge. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and a member of the LST Association; and

Whereas, Mr. Rentiers was a lifetime member of both the College of Charleston Alumni Association and the Hibernian Society. He was one of the founders of the Cougar Club at the College of Charleston and remained an active member. He was a longtime active member of Grace Episcopal Church and served as Senior Warden. He also set up the first hospice corporation in Charleston; and

Whereas, Mr. Rentiers is survived by his wife of forty-seven years, Kathryn Gianatos Rentiers; son, J. Kenneth Rentiers, Jr.; daughters, Mrs. Sally Rentiers Young and Mrs. Kathryn Rentiers Dewey; grandchildren, Sally Kathryn Young, Kathryn Rentiers Young, and Emily McMahon Young. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the Senate, by this resolution, express the profound sorrow of the members of the South Carolina Senate upon the death of J. Kenneth Rentiers of Charleston, and extend their deepest sympathy to his family and many friends.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mrs. Kathryn Gianatos Rentiers of Charleston.
