 GENERAL ASSEMBLY TO THE FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS OF THE HONORABLE HUBERT EUGENE
 LONG OF BATESBURG-LEESVILLE WHO PASSED AWAY ON THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 28, 2000,
 AND TO RECOGNIZE HIS MANY ACHIEVEMENTS AND DEDICATED SERVICE TO HIS COMMUNITY
 AND STATE.

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

EXPRESSING THE DEEPEST SYMPATHY OF THE MEMBERS OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY TO THE FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS OF THE HONORABLE HUBERT EUGENE LONG OF BATESBURG-LEESVILLE WHO PASSED AWAY ON THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 28, 2000, AND TO RECOGNIZE HIS MANY ACHIEVEMENTS AND DEDICATED SERVICE TO HIS COMMUNITY AND STATE.

Whereas, Hubert Eugene Long, the son of the late Eugene Wilton and Sarah Bertha Shealy Long, was born on June 2, 1921, in Lexington County; and

Whereas, Hubert Eugene Long served in the United States Army for three and one-half years during World War II. He graduated from Batesburg-Leesville High School, Clemson University, and, in 1948, from the University of South Carolina Law School. He was a member of the House of Representatives from 1950 to 1952, Solicitor of the Eleventh Judicial Circuit from 1952 to 1978, and in 1984 was elected as Circuit Judge serving with dedication and distinction until his retirement in 1991; and

Whereas, Judge Long was a respected member of the Lexington County Bar Association who practiced law for many years and was a senior partner of the Lexington law firm now known as Nicholson, Davis, Frawley, Anderson, and Ayer, where he returned to serve on a limited basis as "Of Counsel" after his retirement; and

Whereas, Judge Long was a member of the American Bar Association and the South Carolina Bar Association, having served on the Board of Governors, as Chairman of the House of Delegates, and Chairman of the Continuing Legal Education Committee. He was a member of the South Carolina Judicial Council, the Commission of Grievances and Discipline of the South Carolina Bar and was inducted into the American College of Trial Lawyers in 1981. Judge Long also served as Chairman of the Greater Columbia Economic Development Commission and the Columbia Chamber of Commerce; and

Whereas, Judge Long is survived by his beloved wife, Frances Wessinger Long, son and daughter-in-law, Hubert Eugene Long, Jr. and Amy Horne Long, daughter and son-in-law, Nancy Long Pierce and Mickey Pierce, brother, Gerald W. Long, Sr., sister, Betty Jean Long Lewis, and four grandchildren; and

Whereas, Judge Long was a charter member of the Baptist Hospital Foundation and was an active member of Wittenberg Lutheran Church and taught Sunday school for forty-five years. He was also an avid woodworker and collector of new and antique tools; and

Whereas, Judge Long will be deeply missed by his family, many friends and his community. He will be forever remembered for his dedication, service, and commitment to improving the legal profession, as well as being a model for lawyers and public officials; and

Whereas, it is only fitting and proper that the members of the General Assembly pause in their deliberations to note the passing of this outstanding leader in his community and the State. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly extend deepest sympathy to the family and many friends of the Honorable Hubert Eugene Long of Batesburg-Leesville who passed away on Thursday, September 28, 2000, and recognize his many achievements and dedicated service to his community and State.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mrs. Frances Wessinger Long of Batesburg-Leesville.
