 A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE
 GENERAL ASSEMBLY UPON THE DEATH OF DR. ROBERT CATHCART SMITH OF MURRELLS INLET
 AND TO EXTEND DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND FRIENDS.

TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY UPON THE DEATH OF DR. ROBERT CATHCART SMITH OF MURRELLS INLET AND TO EXTEND DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND FRIENDS.

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly were deeply saddened to learn of the death of Robert Cathcart Smith, M. D. on Monday, January 1, 2001; and

Whereas, Dr. Smith was born in Mullins on November 9, 1914, the son of the late Henry Stacy and Adele Smith. He was a 1935 graduate of the Citadel and a 1939 graduate of Duke University School of Medicine. After training at Baltimore City Hospital, he served in the U. S. Army Medical Corps from 1941 to 1945; and

Whereas, Dr. Smith began his private practice in Conway in 1947, retiring from there to Murrells Inlet in 1985. After his retirement, he founded a free medical clinic, now named Smith Medical Clinic, at Baskervill Ministries, Pawleys Island; and

Whereas, one of Dr. Smith's abiding concerns was education; he spent many of his later years improving education for South Carolina's children. He was a founder of Carolina Coastal College in 1954 and served as the first chairman of the Coastal Educational Foundation. He was a member and chairman of the state Higher Education Commission in the 1970's. In 1993 he was named a trustee of Coastal Carolina University; in 1995 he was named trustee emeritus, and in 1998 the university named its science center in his honor; and

Whereas, Dr. Smith received many honors for his community work; he was given the Order of the Palmetto by Governor John West in 1978; the Duke University Medical School bestowed its first Alumnus Humanitarian Award on him; and

Whereas, Dr. Smith was a member of Holy Cross Faith Memorial Episcopal Church at Baskervill. Its congregation recently dedicated a renovated dormitory that will serve as the Smith Clinic; and

Whereas, he was a devoted father and husband who is survived by his wife of sixty-one years, Nancy Arthur Smith, a son Robert C. Smith, Jr., and daughter-in-law, Martha, of Conway; daughters, Suzanne Nash and son-in-law, John, of Columbia, Rebecca Lovelace and son-in-law, Richard, of Conway, and Gretchen Smith of Columbia; eight grandchildren, a great grandson; and his brother, Nathaniel Smith of Mullins; and

Whereas, with the death of this fine man at the age of eighty-six, the people of Horry and Georgetown counties and the State of South Carolina have lost an outstanding citizen, a dedicated doctor, educator, and community leader. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution, express their profound sorrow upon the death of Dr. Robert Cathcart Smith of Murrells Inlet and extend deepest sympathy to his family and friends.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to his widow, Mrs. Nancy Arthur Smith.
