 CORPORATION, AND EXTENDING DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.

EXPRESSING SINCERE SORROW AT THE DEATH OF DR. VIRGIL C. SUMMER, JR., RETIRED CHAIRMAN AND CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER OF SCANA CORPORATION, AND EXTENDING DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.

Whereas, Dr. Virgil Clifton Summer, Jr., retired chairman and chief executive officer of SCANA Corporation, died January 19, 2002, at the age of eighty-one; and

Whereas, Dr. Summer was born in Spartanburg and was reared in Peak in Newberry County; after high school graduation at the age of sixteen he began work with South Carolina Electric and Gas Company's Parr Steam Plant sweeping floors and mowing grass; he was the sole supporter of his mother, siblings, and invalid father; and

Whereas, after a year on the job, Dr. Summer began a lifelong pursuit of education with the study of engineering and management courses through the International Correspondence School; he passed the state examination for his professional engineering license and later earned a master of science degree in engineering from the University of South Carolina in 1968; after his retirement, he received a doctor of philosophy degree from the University of Southern California College of Business and Management in 1999; and

Whereas, Dr. Summer was a self-made man who became an outstanding leader; he rose in the ranks at SCE&G Company, ultimately becoming president, chairman, and chief executive officer of SCANA, the parent company; in 1971, the SCE&G board of directors named the company's first nuclear plant the V. C. Summer Nuclear Station in Dr. Summer's honor; and

Whereas, Dr. Summer was an active and devoted churchman and was active in many civic and community affairs; throughout his career and during his years of retirement, he devoted his life to helping others in countless ways. At the time of his death, he was serving as Board Chair of the Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary, the first layperson in the seminary's history to hold that position, and previously served as Board Chair of the Lutheran Homes of South Carolina; he also served as Board Chair of the Columbia YMCA and a board member of the Lexington Medical Center; and

Whereas, Dr. Summer served in the United States Navy during World War II and was awarded an honorary doctor of laws degree by Newberry College; and

Whereas, Dr. Summer was an outstanding individual and humanitarian and an eminent South Carolina leader, who served his community, state, and nation with dignity and great distinction. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, expresses sincere sorrow at the death of Dr. Virgil C. Summer, Jr., retired chairman and chief executive officer of SCANA Corporation, and extends deepest sympathy to his family and many friends.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to his wife, Mrs. Vera Boland Summer.
