S. 1099

A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO HONOR AND EXTEND SINCERE BEST WISHES TO MR. WILLIAM SEABROOK, SR., ON THE OCCASION OF HIS ONE HUNDREDTH BIRTHDAY ON MARCH 31, 2004, AND WISH HIM CONTINUED GOOD HEALTH AND MUCH HAPPINESS.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate are very pleased to learn that Mr. William Seabrook, Sr., will attain the age of one hundred on March 31, 2004; and

Whereas, Mr. Seabrook, who is affectionately known by all as "Mr. Cook", was born on March 31, 1904, on Edisto Island, South Carolina; and

Whereas, he is the eleventh child of the late Moses and Caroline Seabrook, and he attended the public schools of Charleston County on Edisto Island; and

Whereas, "Mr. Cook" married Janie L. Brown on December 29, 1937, and they have been a loving, devoted couple for sixty-six years; and

Whereas, their union has been blessed with ten children, one of whom is deceased, and thirty-one grandchildren, sixty-three great-grandchildren, and seven great-great-grandchildren; and

Whereas, "Mr. Cook" worked diligently and faithfully to support his family through the years; he was a farm worker on several farms, a logger, fisherman, fishnet maker, part-time navy yard worker, and a worker at the Charleston Lumber and Plywood Company from which he retired; and

Whereas, "Mr. Cook" has been a long-time faithful and loyal member of the Mt. Horr A. M. E. Church; he served on various boards and committees and as Steward of the church; and "Mr. Cook" has the honor of being the most senior male member of the church community; and

Whereas, this remarkable gentleman, who is in the middle of his tenth decade of life, has followed a daily routine that we would all do well to emulate; each and every day "Mr. Cook" rises early and helps with chores such as cooking, chopping, and bringing in the firewood; he feeds the pigs and prepares the fields for planting and harvesting corn, and he prepares the ground for his own personal garden; and

Whereas, besides his loving wife and his marvelous extended family, a host of other relatives and friends, and many other folk whom "Mr. Cook" has mentored and nurtured over the years, will help him celebrate the joyous occasion of his one hundredth birthday on March thirty-first; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate greatly admire "Mr. Cook" for his strong work ethic, his humility, the wisdom he shares with all who make his acquaintance, and the extraordinary example he sets for all of us to follow; and

Whereas, it is proper and fitting for the South Carolina Senate to pause in its deliberations to recognize such a distinguished and venerable son of South Carolina. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the South Carolina State Senate, by this resolution, honor and extend sincere best wishes to Mr. William Seabrook, Sr., on the occasion of his one hundredth birthday on March 31, 2004, and wish him continued good health and much happiness.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Mr. William Seabrook, Sr., a gentleman who is affectionately known by all as "Mr. Cook".
