A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND AND RECOGNIZE JOHNNIE WRIGHT, SR., ORANGEBURG COUNTY COUNCILMAN, FOR ALL THE HARD WORK AND DEDICATION HE CONTINUOUSLY PUTS FORTH AS A COUNCILMAN AND TO EXTEND BEST WISHES TO HIM IN ALL OF HIS FUTURE ENDEAVORS.

Whereas, to serve the State or local community through political office is a noble and humbling profession and the Palmetto State holds its elected officials in highest esteem; and

Whereas, Johnnie Wright, Sr., of Eutawville, South Carolina, has been an integral part of Orangeburg County for several years, and it is his hard work and perseverance that has made him the successful man that he is today; and

Whereas, the seventh of fourteen children of Mrs. Rosa Lee and Mr. Sam Wright, Jr., Johnnie was born and raised in Eutawville without any indoor plumbing or electricity; and

Whereas, raised by his grandmother until the age of four, Mr. Wright learned to work in the cotton fields and to pick beans, peas, and corn, all while attending St. James Middle School as well; and

Whereas, discovering the value of education at an early age, Mr. Wright made a commitment to complete his education at Roberts High School, graduating in 1964, and moved on to the Orangeburg-Calhoun Technical College where he received a degree in computer technology; and

Whereas, upon graduating from high school, Mr. Wright met Grace Collier at a local church camp and they corresponded throughout Mr. Wright's time in the Vietnam War, and they married in 1968 when Mr. Wright returned home; and

Whereas, while working at a chemical plant and raising a family of his own, Mr. Wright began pursuing a degree in business management, and he has passed his devotion to education along to his three children, Michelle, a chemist, Johnnie Jr., a doctor, and Dewayne, a computer technology major; and

Whereas, after battling five years of cancer, Mr. Wright lost Grace in 1989 and after her death, he met an old friend, Vernell White, and the two married in 1993, adding three step-children to the family; and

Whereas, a member of the St. James Baptist Church in Eutawville, Mr. Wright has served on the deacon board and as a bookkeeper, and he is a member of various social organizations as well, including the NAACP and the VFW; and

Whereas, politically active as an Orangeburg County Councilman, Mr. Wright was also involved in the PTO throughout his children's educational careers, and he worked for the Navy Yard for twenty-five years until it closed in 1995; and

Whereas, working toward economic development with his fellow councilmen, Mr. Wright is working on a regional water system that would provide for more infrastructure, which, in turn, would create more jobs in the area; and

Whereas, the Orangeburg County Council is proud to have Johnnie Wright, Sr., as one of its esteemed members, and the Palmetto State is honored to call Mr. Wright one of its own. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives commend and recognize Johnnie Wright, Sr., Orangeburg County Councilman, for all the hard work and dedication he continuously puts forth as a councilman and extend best wishes to him in all of his future endeavors.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Johnnie Wright, Sr., of Eutawville, South Carolina.
