 SOUTH CAROLINA GENERAL ASSEMBLY UPON THE DEATH OF SERGEANT ANDREW JOSEPH
 DERRICK OF COLUMBIA, WHILE SERVING HIS COUNTRY IN IRAQ, AND TO EXTEND THE
 DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.

TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA GENERAL ASSEMBLY UPON THE DEATH OF SERGEANT ANDREW JOSEPH DERRICK OF COLUMBIA, WHILE SERVING HIS COUNTRY IN IRAQ, AND TO EXTEND THE DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly were deeply saddened to learn of the death of United States Army Sergeant Andrew Joseph Derrick on September 23, 2005, in Baghdad, Iraq; and

Whereas, dedicated to serving his country and devoted to securing freedom and democracy for the Iraqi people, Sergeant Derrick bravely patrolled the streets of Baghdad, training Iraqi police to protect their citizens; and

Whereas, Derrick surrendered his life during his second tour in Iraq, after having already completed tours in Bosnia and South Korea; and

Whereas, Derrick, who was born in Columbia, graduated from Marion Military Institute and attended Francis Marion University; he was an outstanding student athlete, and while at Marion Military Institute, he lettered in varsity football, baseball, and basketball, was named the Class of 1998's "Best All Round Athlete", and earned a place on Alabama's All Star Baseball Team in 1998; and

Whereas, Derrick, though only 25 years old, celebrated an extensive military career and was awarded the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, the Army Achievement Medal, the National Defense Service Ribbon, the Iraqi Campaign Medal, and the Global War on Terror Medal, among many other distinctions; and

Whereas, a loving son, brother, and fiancé, Derrick, a true patriot and a man of strong Christian faith, leaves behind a legacy of unparalleled honor and integrity and is remembered for his genuine selflessness and abiding commitment to all endeavors he undertook; and

Whereas, he will be sorely missed, but will forever stand as an example of a fine South Carolinian soldier who shed his own blood so that others may live to enjoy the freedom that we so often take for granted. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, express their profound sorrow upon the death of Sergeant Andrew Joseph Derrick, while serving his country in Iraq, and extend the deepest sympathy to his family and many friends.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Sergeant Derrick's family.
