 CITIZENS, MISS HALLIE MAE BYRD WHO PASSED AWAY ON FRIDAY, MARCH 5, 1999.

TO EXTEND THE DEEPEST SYMPATHY OF THE MEMBERS OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY TO THE FAMILY AND FRIENDS OF ONE OF LEE COUNTY'S FINEST CITIZENS, MISS HALLIE MAE BYRD WHO PASSED AWAY ON FRIDAY, MARCH 5, 1999.

Whereas, on March 5, 1999, Lee County and the State of South Carolina lost one of its finest citizens, Miss Hallie Mae Byrd; and

Whereas, Miss Byrd was born in Bishopville, South Carolina, on May 26, 1908, the second of eight children born to the late Mary F. Franklin and Lucious Byrd; and

Whereas, Hallie graduated from Dennis High School and continued her education at Morris College in Sumter, South Carolina, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Education degree in 1957; and

Whereas, Morris College maintained a place of importance in Miss Byrd's life as she was an active member of the college's Alumni Society for many years; and

Whereas, she taught language arts and other subjects at Dennis High School for approximately forty-seven years and, after her retirement from the Lee County School System, continued to substitute teach for many years; and

Whereas, Miss Byrd was an inspiration, motivator, and wonderful educator because of her love of teaching and children; and

Whereas, foremost in Miss Byrd's life was her religious faith; at a young age Hallie professed her faith and was baptized in the Bishopville A.M.E. Church; she later joined the New Bethel A.M.E. Church where she was a Pastor's Aide and a Sunday School teacher, and a devoted member of the Missionary Society and Senior Choir; and

Whereas, Miss Byrd leaves many relatives who will cherish her memory; among them are two sisters, Elizabeth Harris Gainer and Elease Stephenson, and a foster brother, Robert Lee Thomas, all of Cleveland, Ohio, a cousin, Marion Franklin of Bishopville, as well as nieces, grandnieces, and grandnephew, great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews, and many other relatives and friends;

Whereas, Miss Byrd's family remembers that one of her dearest past-times and greatest loves was her garden and that she could be seen tending to her vegetables every day; and

Whereas, the Bishopville community will sorely miss Hallie Mae Byrd and her many positive contributions to the spirit of their town; and

Whereas, it is fitting and proper that the members of the General Assembly pause in their deliberations to note the passing of so great a daughter of South Carolina. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly extend their deepest sympathy to the family and friends of one of Lee County's finest citizens, Miss Hallie Mae Byrd who passed away on Friday, March 5, 1999.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Miss Byrd's family.
