A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO EXPRESS THE SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA UPON THE DEATH OF JUDGE ARCHIE BEATTIE OF LEE COUNTY ON JANUARY 17, 2005, AND TO CONVEY THEIR DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly were deeply saddened to learn of the death of Judge Archie Beattie on January 17, 2005; and

Whereas, Judge Beattie was born on February 22, 1913, in Kershaw County, and he graduated from the University of South Carolina and received his law degree from the University in 1935; and

Whereas, he practiced law with the law firm of Bennett, Shand, and McGowan in Columbia until he entered the United States Air Force in 1943 where he served his country nobly in the Pacific Theatre; and

Whereas, after the war, Judge Beattie made Lee County his home and went on to serve as a Master in Equity, Probate Judge, and Family Court Judge. He also farmed extensively in Wisacky; and

Whereas, in addition to his service to his local community, State, and nation, Judge Beattie also was an active and longtime member of the Bishopville Presbyterian Church where he served as an elder; and

Whereas, the beloved husband of Ann McCutchen McDonald Beattie, he was also the father of two daughters: Harvie Beattie Abney and Caroline Beattie Bowen; the stepfather to five children: George Gregg Cooper, Marsha Ann Cooper Gentry, Thomas English Cooper, John Michael McDonald, and Robert Norman McDonald. Judge Beattie boasted twelve grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly wish to publicly recognize the enormous contributions that Judge Archie Beattie made so selflessly during his lifetime. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution express their sorrow on the death of Judge Archie Beattie of Lee County on January 17, 2005, and convey their deepest sympathy to his family and many friends.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Judge Archie Beattie.
