A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR MR. W. W. TISDALE OF BISHOPVILLE FOR A LIFETIME OF WONDERFUL ACHIEVEMENTS AND SERVICE TO HIS COMMUNITY AND STATE THROUGH HIS GIFT FOR MUSIC AND TEACHING.

Whereas, Mr. W. W. Tisdale is widely known and respected throughout the Bishopville community; and

Whereas, he was born in 1912 and attended Bishopville schools during his formative years where he enjoyed football, basketball, and music, receiving instructional training in both the piano and organ; and

Whereas, Mr. Tisdale went on to attend Presbyterian College where he graduated in 1936 with a Bachelors of Science degree in biology. During his years at Presbyterian College he was a member of the football team, the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity, and a pianist for the Men's Glee Club. He was also voted best looking male student for three consecutive years; and

Whereas, after graduating from college, he began employment in the Aiken school district as a teacher and coach. He taught typing, shorthand, and bookkeeping, while coaching basketball and football. He also directed the chorus; and

Whereas, he was drafted into the military in 1943 and bravely served his country as a sergeant in Europe until the end of World War II; and

Whereas, in 1947 he married Miss Marion Mabry. They raised two loving daughters, Angelle and Miriam; and

Whereas, in 1949 Mr. Tisdale began teaching at Bishopville High School. In addition to his teaching responsibilities, he also organized Bishopville High School's first band; and

Whereas, in September 1958, after declining an offer to serve as a hotel manager, he began teaching biology in the Hartsville school district and after two years started and led a school chorus. Thereafter, he taught choir there for twenty-eight years producing seven Broadway musicals and various other performances at church and other events. He retired from teaching in 1976; and

Whereas, Mr. Tisdale also served as the organist and choir director for the Bishopville Presbyterian Church during this time. He would attend Bethlehem United Methodist Church on Sunday mornings where he taught Sunday school and then leave for Bishopville Presbyterian to play the organ; and

Whereas, this talented and amazing man has worked to strengthen his community through extensive civic contributions. In 2000 he received the Order of the Palmetto in recognition of this service; and

Whereas, even at age ninety-two he remains a very active member in the Bethlehem United Methodist Church where he played the organ, organized the Forever Young Club, and, until recently, taught the Men's Bible Class. The Sunday school class recently honored him by renaming its class the W. W. Tisdale Men's Bible Class; and

Whereas, he lives in the same home he moved into when he was four years old and is blessed to have five grandchildren and three great grandchildren; and

Whereas, the members of the House of Representative are proud to recognize and commend this wonderful son of South Carolina for touching the lives of so many people for more than ninety years. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, recognize and honor Mr. W. W. Tisdale of Bishopville for a lifetime of wonderful achievements and service to his community and State through his gift for music and teaching.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mr. Tisdale.
