A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO EXTEND APPRECIATION TO GEORGE R. BARNES FOR HIS EXEMPLARY SERVICE TO THE CITIZENS OF ORANGEBURG COUNTY BY SERVING ON THE ORANGEBURG COUNTY BOARD OF ELECTIONS AND REGISTRATION ON THE OCCASION OF HIS RETIREMENT FROM THE BOARD.

Whereas, George R. Barnes has unselfishly contributed to a better way of life for the citizens of Orangeburg County by his twenty-nine year and three-month service on the Orangeburg County Board of Elections and Registration; and

Whereas, George R. Barnes, born in Camden, was a leader as a young man, achieving the rank of Eagle Scout and serving as a camp counselor at Camp Barstow; and

Whereas, he received a Bachelor of Science and Masters of Science in chemical engineering from Clemson University; and

Whereas, he and his wife, Joy, moved to Orangeburg in 1965, where he was employed with P. E. Wannamaker, now the Ethyl Corporation from which he retired; and

Whereas, he has enjoyed traveling to Clemson home games and has been a contributor to IPTAY and the President's Club; and

Whereas, George Barnes joined the Orangeburg County Board of Voter Registration in October of 1976 and has been an involved board member since that time; and

Whereas, George has been certified as a commissioner through the training and certification program conducted by the State Election Commission; and

Whereas, he was past president of the South Carolina Association of Registration and Election Officials (SCARE) from 1986-1988; and

Whereas, it is proper and fitting that the Senate pause in its deliberations to recognize this outstanding public official as he is retiring from this important position; and

Whereas, George R. Barnes has touched countless citizens of Orangeburg County by his professionalism, his commitment to service, and his dedication to his job; and

Whereas, he will be sorely missed by all with whom he has been in contact. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, extend appreciation to George R. Barnes for his exemplary service to the citizens of Orangeburg County by serving on the Orangeburg County Board of Elections and Registration on the occasion of his retirement from the board.
