THE COMMITTEE ON
INVITATIONS AND MEMORIAL RESOLUTIONS
To whom was referred a Concurrent Resolution (S. 1383) to request that the Department of Transportation name the bridge that crosses the North Fork Edisto River in Orangeburg County along United States Highway 321, etc., respectfully
REPORT:
That they have duly and carefully considered the same and recommend that the same do pass:
ROBERT W. LEACH, SR. for Committee.
A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
TO REQUEST THAT THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION NAME THE BRIDGE THAT CROSSES THE NORTH FORK EDISTO RIVER IN ORANGEBURG COUNTY ALONG UNITED STATES HIGHWAY 321 "CARSON BRIDGE" AND ERECT APPROPRIATE MARKERS OR SIGNS AT THIS BRIDGE THAT CONTAIN THE WORDS "CARSON BRIDGE".
Whereas, Mr. Hebert Marvin Carson was born on December 24, 1878, and died on May 2, 1948; and
Whereas, he was married to Effie Bonita Pearson who was born on October 25, 1889, and died on November 25, 1952; and
Whereas, Mr. Carson's ancestors sailed from Ireland in 1767 and settled on four hundred fifty acres along the North Fork Edisto River, a bounty land grant from King George the Third of England; and
Whereas, the Carsons were hardworking entrepreneurs who survived the great depression by living off their own resources: the crops, livestock, and timber from their land; and
Whereas, in 1950, the Carson family donated a four-acre tract of this land in Orangeburg County to the local Jaycees on the condition that it would be developed into a park where families could picnic, fish, and swim. Today this park is known as Carson Park; and
Whereas, it would be fitting and proper to also name the bridge that borders Carson Park in honor of the Carson family. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly request that the Department of Transportation name the bridge that crosses the North Fork Edisto River in Orangeburg County along United States Highway 321 "Carson Bridge" and erect appropriate markers or signs at this bridge that contain the words "Carson Bridge".
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Department of Transportation.
