AN ACT TO DESIGNATE THE BRIDGE CONNECTING COOSAW ISLAND TO THE MAINLAND IN BEAUFORT COUNTY THE "L. G. BARNWELL BRIDGE" AND TO PROVIDE FOR THE PAYMENT OF THE MARKERS OR SIGNS.

Whereas, the late L. G. Barnwell was born on Coosaw Island in Beaufort County and was a leader in the Friendship Baptist Church on the island; and

Whereas, Deacon Barnwell served as president of an organization known as the Coosaw Island Improvement Association, and largely through his ardent, continuous efforts his dream to have Coosaw Island connected to the mainland became a reality when the bridge to Coosaw Island was dedicated in 1965; and

Whereas, the General Assembly believes that Deacon Barnwell's leadership, which has resulted in a vast improvement in the quality of life on Coosaw Island, should be recognized. Now, therefore,

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:

Designation of bridge

SECTION 1. The bridge connecting Coosaw Island to the mainland in Beaufort County is designated "L. G. Barnwell Bridge". The Department of Highways and Public Transportation shall install appropriate markers or signs at places on the bridge, as it considers advisable, containing the words "L. G. Barnwell Bridge". The cost of the markers or signs must be paid from "C" funds allocated to Beaufort County.

Time effective

SECTION 2. This act shall take effect upon approval by the Governor.
