A CONCURRENT
RESOLUTION
EXPRESSING THE SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE
GENERAL ASSEMBLY AT THE DEATH OF LAURA JANE
DENNIS COKER OF CLARENDON COUNTY AND EXTENDING
SYMPATHY TO HER FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.
Whereas, Laura Jane Dennis Coker of Turbeville, Clarendon County,
died in November, 1991, at the age of ninety-five; and
Whereas, Mrs. Coker was born in Turbeville -- the daughter of Michael
L. "Bud" Dennis and Mary Ann Gray Dennis; and
Whereas, she was a charter member of Turbeville Southern Methodist
Church, the mother church of the denomination; and
Whereas, she was a founder of the Women's Missionary Society of the
Southern Methodist Church; and
Whereas, Mrs. Coker had an ongoing interest in world missions, having
been challenged by a missionary on furlough in about 1910; and
Whereas, her husband, Mr. Clarence E. Coker, died in 1980; and
Whereas, Mrs. Coker is survived by one daughter and five sons, namely:
Mrs. Charles A. Thigpen (Lolly) of Nashville, Tennessee; Mr. G. Ray
Coker, Dr. Larry W. Coker, and Mr. Donald G. Coker, of Turbeville; Dr.
Homer Coker of Carrollton, Georgia; and Dr. C. E. Coker, Jr., of
Manning; and
Whereas, she is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. Meddie Phillips of
Columbia and Mrs. Phronie Lane of Lynchburg, and by twenty-six
grandchildren and forty-four great-grandchildren; and
Whereas, her grandsons served as her pallbearers, namely: G. Ray
Coker, Jr., Larry W. Coker, Jr., Dennis E. Coker, Thomas A. Coker,
Michael D. Coker, Jonathan N. Thigpen, Donald G. Coker, Jr., Clarence
E. Coker, Jr., and David A. Coker (who was on military duty and could
not attend); and
Whereas, Mrs. Coker was an outstanding lady and a person whose
beliefs and actions inspired countless individuals over the years; and
Whereas, she gave tirelessly to her community, family, and church and
will be greatly missed; and
Whereas, we want her family and her many friends to know that they are
in our thoughts and have our deepest sympathy. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South
Carolina, by this resolution, express sorrow at the death of Laura Jane
Dennis Coker of Clarendon County and extend sympathy to her family
and her many friends.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to each
of Mrs. Coker's six children named above in this resolution and to her
pastor, the Reverend Billy Griffith, Pastor of Turbeville Southern
Methodist Church at Turbeville.
