A CONCURRENT
RESOLUTION
TO EXPRESS THE DEEPEST SYMPATHY OF THE MEMBERS
OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY TO THE FAMILY AND MANY
FRIENDS AND ADMIRERS OF MRS. MARTHA WHARTON
BARNETTE OF GREENWOOD WHO DIED OCTOBER 12, 1992.
Whereas, Mrs. Martha Wharton Barnette of Greenwood departed this
life October 12, 1992, after a tragic accident; and
Whereas, Mrs. Barnette will be missed greatly by those who loved her
and admired her for she gave so much of herself to so many; and
Whereas, the contributions to her community and her State are too
numerous to list, but the accomplishments of her good works at First
Presbyterian Church and in her civic activities will be enjoyed by
generations to come; and
Whereas, born in Greenwood, she was a daughter of the late Whitfield
Carlisle and Ella Hodges Lee Wharton; and
Whereas, a 1947 graduate of Lander College, she served as chairman
of Lander's first Major Capital Campaign, 1980-82, and spearheaded
efforts to increase the endowment of the University's Foundation. She
held various offices in the Afternoon Lander Club, including the
presidency and vice presidency and was on the steering committee that
worked to establish a chaplaincy at the university; and
Whereas, Lander honored Mrs. Barnette at the 1985 Spring
Commencement Ceremonies by awarding her the Medallion of Honor
which recognizes significant contributions to the university through
one's time, talents, and resources; and
Whereas, at the time of her death, she served as president of The
Lander Foundation and as secretary of the Lander Board of Trustees.
She also had served on the State College Board of Trustees which
formerly governed Lander, Francis Marion College, and the College
of Charleston; and
Whereas, on the state and community levels, Mrs. Barnette served on
the South Carolina State Museum Board. She formerly had served as
president and chairman of the Emerald Center Foundation and was a
regional chairman of the Governor's Mansion Foundation. She had
served as chairman of the Greenwood Board of Directors of Citizens
and Southern National Bank, now NationsBank, and was an
Endowment Trustee for the McCormick Arts Council. She was also
a former member of the Piedmont Technical College Board of
Visitors; and
Whereas, she was a member of the First Presbyterian Church where
she formerly had served as deacon and elder. She had been a Red
Cross volunteer at the Greenwood Methodist Home, a former
volunteer at Emerald Junior High School, and a former tutor with the
Greenwood Literacy Council; and
Whereas, Mrs. Barnette was a member of the Ivy Garden Club, the
Danse de Noel Assembly, Greenwood Woman's Club, the American
Legion Auxiliary, and the Star Fort Chapter of the D.A.R.; and
Whereas, surviving are her husband, P. Henderson Barnette and a son,
P. H. "Hank" Barnette, Jr., of Greenwood; two daughters,
Martha Blatt and Edith Barnette, both of Columbia; two sisters, Dollee
W. Gamble of St. Louis, Missouri, and Julie W. Cushing of
Greenwood; and one grandson. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly express their deepest
sympathy to the family and many friends and admirers of Mrs. Martha
Wharton Barnette of Greenwood who died October 12, 1992.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to
the family of Mrs. Barnette.
