A CONCURRENT
RESOLUTION
EXPRESSING THE DEEPEST SYMPATHY OF THE MEMBERS OF THE
GENERAL ASSEMBLY TO THE FAMILY OF DR. H. COOPER BLACK,
JR., DISTINGUISHED SURGEON AND PROFESSOR, UPON HIS
DEATH DURING THE LEGISLATIVE INTERIM.
Whereas, the members of the General Assembly were deeply saddened to
learn of the death of Dr. H. Cooper Black, Jr., during the legislative interim
at the age of fifty-four; and
Whereas, Dr. Black was born in Orangeburg County, was a graduate of
Wofford College, and received his medical degree from the Medical
University of South Carolina; and
Whereas, he was a highly respected and admired surgeon throughout
Lexington and Richland counties, and in addition was an outstanding teacher
of young medical students as assistant clinical professor of surgery at the
University of South Carolina Medical School; and
Whereas, Dr. Black served patients and his profession in many capacities
including service as chief of staff and member of the board of trustees of
the Lexington Medical Center, a member of the board of trustees of
Lowman Home, a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, an affiliate
of the Royal Society of Medicine of London, and a diplomat of the
American Board of Surgery; and
Whereas, in addition to his demanding duties as a physician, he had a great
love for the outdoors as evidenced by his membership in the Sandlapper
Field Trial Club and as chairman of the South Carolina Sporting Dog
Commission; and
Whereas, with the death of this truly fine man at the age of fifty-four, the
people of Lexington and Richland counties and the State of South Carolina
have lost a dedicated and capable surgeon, a gifted teacher, and a good
friend; and
Whereas, the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution, would
like to extend their sincere condolences to his wife, children, father,
stepmother, and other members of his family upon his untimely death.
Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly express their deepest sympathy
to the family of Dr. H. Cooper Black, Jr., distinguished surgeon and
professor, upon his death during the legislative interim.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to
his widow, Mrs. Jackie DuBose Black.
