 Senate to the family and many friends and admirers of Mr. Samuel Edward Diggs
 of Columbia who died Tuesday, April 19, 1994.

A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO EXTEND THE DEEPEST SYMPATHY OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SENATE TO THE FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS AND ADMIRERS OF MR. SAMUEL EDWARD DIGGS OF COLUMBIA WHO DIED TUESDAY, APRIL 19, 1994.

Whereas, Mr. Samuel Edward Diggs of Columbia died Tuesday, April 19, 1994; and

Whereas, born in the small community of Hagood in Sumter County in 1908, he was a son of the late Elizabeth Diggs. Mr. Diggs attended Morris College, graduated from Benedict College with a bachelor of science degree in mathematics, and did graduate work at Claflin College and North Carolina A&T University; and

Whereas, Mr. Diggs became a math instructor at W.E. Parker Academy in 1934 and was asked to head Douglas Elementary School as principal, where he held this esteemed position for forty years, from 1935 until his retirement in 1975; and

Whereas, Mr. Diggs was a "people" person who had an excellent rapport with everyone. From working tobacco fields in Connecticut to laying water lines in the streets of New York City during his college summers, his awareness and sensitivity for people was enhanced. His philosophy of life was based upon two quotes from the poetry of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow: "Still achieving, still pursuing, learn to labor and wait," (from Psalm of Life) and "All things come round to him who will but wait," (from Tales of a Wayside Inn); and

Whereas, his death saddened many who knew him and whose lives he had touched. "I would characterize him as a man of love," Edgefield County Administrator T. C. McCain said. "He demonstrated that through the long years of service he gave to his fellowman as an educator in this county. To many of his students he served as a father"; and

Whereas, surviving are his wife, LaNelle Cooper Diggs; a son, Samuel Diggs of Columbia; two daughters, LaVerne Diggs of Columbia and Dr. Tresa Diggs Spells of York, Pennsylvania; a brother, William Diggs of Washington; a sister, Leila Haile of Washington; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the Senate extend their deepest sympathy to the family and many friends and admirers of Mr. Samuel Edward Diggs of Columbia who died Tuesday, April 19, 1994.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Diggs family.
