02/05/98 Senate Adopted SJ-12
A SENATE RESOLUTION
TO RECOGNIZE, COMMEMORATE AND EXPRESS
PROFOUND GRATITUDE AND SORROW FOR THE SUPREME
SACRIFICE MADE ON FEBRUARY 8, 1968, BY THREE
YOUNG STUDENTS, SAMUEL HAMMOND, JR., AN
EIGHTEEN YEAR OLD SOUTH CAROLINA STATE COLLEGE
FRESHMAN FROM FT. LAUDERDALE, FLORIDA, DELANO
HERMAN MIDDLETON, A SEVENTEEN YEAR OLD STUDENT
AT WILKINSON HIGH SCHOOL IN ORANGEBURG, AND
HENRY EZEKIAL SMITH, AN EIGHTEEN YEAR OLD
SOPHOMORE AT SOUTH CAROLINA STATE COLLEGE,
FROM MARION.
Whereas, these three young men: Samuel Hammond, Jr., Delano
Herman Middleton, and Henry Ezekial Smith, believing in America
and our systems, were joining other young men and women in
peaceful demonstrations protesting the prohibition of their entrance
into and use of a local bowling alley because of their race; and
Whereas, in the process these young men were shot and killed while
twenty-seven others, male and female, were wounded; and
Whereas, those of us in responsible roles of leadership today wish to
express to their families, friends and all Americans our sincere
sorrow at their deaths and profound gratitude for their courage and
efforts; and
Whereas, we sincerely believe that we all must learn to love and
appreciate each other as children of the same Maker and members of
one race, the human race; and
Whereas, we want to finally recognize all of these courageous young
people for their efforts and sacrifice and declare February 8 as an
honorary day of memory for Samuel Hammond, Jr., Delano Herman
Middleton, and Henry Ezekial Smith. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate:
That the members of the Senate posthumously honor these three
brave young men on the occasion of the thirtieth anniversary of their
great sacrifice and that South Carolina State University will display
this resolution in a position of honor and prominence in the
University's Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to
South Carolina State University.
