 MILITARY HONORS BESTOWED UPON HIM BY A GRATEFUL NATION.

RECOGNIZING FRANCIS S. CURREY OF MONCKS CORNER ON THE MILITARY HONORS BESTOWED UPON HIM BY A GRATEFUL NATION.

Whereas, it has been said that there is no greater honor that can be conferred upon a member of the United States military than the Medal of Honor; its recipients have demonstrated conspicuous gallantry in the performance of their duty; their disregard for their own personal safety has often saved the lives of their comrades, inflicted heavy losses on the enemy, and turned the tide of battle; on occasion, the actions of these heroic individuals have even forced the enemy to withdraw from the field; so it was with Sergeant Francis S. Currey, United States Army, Company K, 120th Infantry, 30th Infantry Division, on December 21, 1944 near Malmedy, Belgium against the Germans during World War II; and

Whereas, Sgt. Currey's heroic and gallant actions on that day inflicted such heavy damage to the enemy that the Germans were forced to fall back; Sgt. Currey's courageous actions not only saved the lives of five American soldiers but also halted an enemy advance, thereby preventing the Germans from flanking his battalion's position; there is a distinct possibility that this may have cut a considerable amount of time off the duration of the war in Europe; United States Army Intelligence had mistakenly estimated that German forces would be unable to operate tanks in North Malmedy due to the area's unsuitable terrain; it was therefore considered unnecessary to station anything but a small unit in that zone; later it was speculated that, if the Germans had broken through that day in December 1944, the war in Europe would have been prolonged for another six weeks, and many persons feel it would have lasted even longer; and

Whereas, Sgt. Francis S. Currey will long be remembered as a skilled soldier with an in-depth knowledge of weaponry, a firm commitment to duty, and uncommon valor; and

Whereas, for these actions he was awarded the Medal of Honor; and

Whereas, he has also been awarded other medals and honors, including the Silver Star Medal, the European Theater of Operations United States Army Certificate of Merit, the Bronze Star, and three Purple Heart Medals; and

Whereas, the State of South Carolina is blessed to have Francis S. Currey among her citizenry; he is a gallant, heroic man and is greatly deserving of recognition and praise. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, recognizes Francis S. Currey of Moncks Corner on the military honors bestowed upon him by a grateful nation.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Francis S. Currey.
