A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND COMMEND ONE OF SOUTH CAROLINA'S GREATEST CITIZENS AND PATRIOTS, MRS. NELIDA CABALLERO, WHO WAS BORN IN CUBA, SPENT MANY YEARS OPPOSING THE COMMUNIST REGIME IN CUBA, AND WHO SACRIFICED EVERYTHING TO BRING HER CHILDREN TO THIS COUNTRY AND ESCAPE COMMUNISM.

Whereas, Mrs. Nelida Isabel Caballero was born in the coastal city of Mantanzas, Cuba, in 1930. She attended the University of Havana where she excelled and subsequently entered the Cuban School of Law. In her final year of law school, she met Dr. Armando Caballero and married; and

Whereas, they had three children when Fidel Castro took power; they now have four children. They were asked to join the Communist Party but refused; and

Whereas, the Caballeros became strong opponents of the Communist regime and gained popularity for providing free medical treatment, black market food, and safekeeping to those who were fighting the Castro government; and

Whereas, in 1968, the government took the eldest son, Armando, to a sugarcane work camp. After running away and being captured, Armando was severely beaten and placed on a death notice. At this point, it was clearly time for the family to leave Cuba; and

Whereas, in 1969, the Caballeros were flown to Spain and subsequently relocated to Columbia, South Carolina, in 1972; and

Whereas, Mrs. Caballero since becoming a South Carolinian has devoted her time to raising four wonderful children who each has become a success in his or her own right; and

Whereas, few people love the freedoms offered in the United States as much as Nelida Caballero and few people have contributed as much to the State of South Carolina as she has; and

Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives believe it would be a fitting tribute to this amazing and courageous lady if her lifelong efforts to resist communism and raise a family free of tyranny were recognized and acknowledged. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and commend one of South Carolina's greatest citizens and patriots, Mrs. Nelida Caballero, who was born in Cuba, spent many years opposing the Communist regime in Cuba, and who sacrificed everything to bring her children to this country and escape communism.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mrs. Nelida Caballero.
