A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO REQUEST THAT THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION NAME THE PORTION OF SOUTH CAROLINA HIGHWAY 9 IN SPARTANBURG COUNTY FROM ITS INTERSECTION WITH OLD FURNACE ROAD TO ITS INTERSECTION WITH CLARK/BIBLE CHURCH ROAD "NOLEN RYAN HUTCHINGS MEMORIAL HIGHWAY" AND ERECT APPROPRIATE SIGNS OR MARKERS ALONG THIS PORTION OF HIGHWAY CONTAINING THE WORDS "NOLEN RYAN HUTCHINGS MEMORIAL HIGHWAY".

Amend Title To Conform

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly were deeply saddened to learn that United States Marine Corps Private Nolen Ryan Hutchings, of Boiling Springs in Spartanburg County, lost his life on March 23, 2003, in the service of his country in An Nasiriyah, Iraq; and

Whereas, Private Hutchings, assigned to the 1st Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Expeditioning Brigade based at Camp LeJeune, was a 2000 graduate of Boiling Springs High School, and a member of Northbrook Baptist Church of Boiling Springs, who was proud to be an American and especially proud to be a Marine; and

Whereas, Private Hutchings' sacrifice is a grim reminder of the human cost of the wars fought by our country but is also continuing evidence that when duty calls, there are young men and women who are representative of the best among us who are willing and able to answer the call; and

Whereas, Private Hutchings exemplifies the courage and sacrifice of generations of young Americans who have served their country so ably and so faithfully; and

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly believe that it is fitting and proper to recognize this distinguished son of the Palmetto State by naming a portion of South Carolina Highway 9 in Spartanburg County in his honor. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly request that the Department of Transportation name the portion of South Carolina Parris Bridge Road in Spartanburg County from its intersection with Old Furnace Road to its intersection with S. C. Highway 11 "Nolen Ryan Hutchings Memorial Highway" and erect appropriate signs or markers along this portion of highway containing the words "Nolen Ryan Hutchings Memorial Highway".

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Department of Transportation.
