TO REQUEST THAT THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION NAME EXIT 82 AT THE INTERSECTION OF CHERRY ROAD AND INTERSTATE I-77 THE "COLEMAN POAG INTERCHANGE" IN HONOR OF THE HONORABLE COLEMAN GROVES POAG, WHO SERVED THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA AND THE COUNTY OF YORK WITH DISTINCTION AS A STATE SENATOR AND AS A MEMBER OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES AND WHO HAS SERVED HIS STATE WITH DISTINCTION AS A MEMBER OF THE BOARD OF VISITORS OF CLEMSON UNIVERSITY; AND TO REQUEST THE DEPARTMENT TO ERECT APPROPRIATE SIGNS OR MARKERS REFLECTING THIS DESIGNATION.
Whereas, the Honorable Coleman G. Poag, was born on March 20, 1930, at Rock Hill, York County, to James Pressley Poag and Mary Owings Groves; and
Whereas, Coleman G. Poag, is a 1951 graduate of Davidson College; and
Whereas, on June 13, 1958, he married Eugenia Holroyd of Rock Hill and they are the proud parents of five children; and
Whereas, Coleman Poag is an entrepreneur in York County who distinguished himself in the business community by establishing the Poag Realty Company in Rock Hill where he specialized in business as a real estate broker and builder; and
Whereas, he began his career dedicated to community and public service as a City Councilman and Mayor Pro Tempore for Rock Hill; and
Whereas, he served as President of the Kiwanis Club in 1965; as President of the York County Homebuilders Association in 1976; as President of the York County Board of Realtors in 1978; as Director of the Rock Hill Chamber of Commerce; as a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars; as Exalted Ruler of the Elks Club in 1960; as Commander of the American Legion in 1968; and as President of the Optimist Club in 1993; and
Whereas, Coleman Poag was elected to the House of Representatives for York County for the One Hundredth General Assembly and served on numerous committees; and
Whereas, he was subsequently elected to the South Carolina Senate in a special election October 25, 1977, and served with great distinction for a period of seven years until November of 1984; and
Whereas, during his service as a Senator, he served on the Senate Finance Committee, the Senate Banking and Insurance Committee, the Senate Labor, Commerce and Industry Committee, the Senate Invitations Committee, the Senate Medical Affairs Committee, the Senate Fish Game and Forestry Committee, the Senate Rules Committee, the Senate Transportation Committee, the Senate Corrections and Penology Committee, and the Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee; and
Whereas, Senator Poag was a progressive and highly effective political leader for York County who provided leadership which resulted in the county's strong economic growth; and
Whereas, it is fitting and proper that the Exit 82 intersection at Cherry Road and I-77 in York County be named the "Coleman Poag Interchange" in honor of this distinguished South Carolinian. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly request the Department of Transportation to name the Exit 82 intersection at Cherry Road and I-77 in York County, the "Coleman Poag Interchange" since he served with distinction as a State Senator and as a member of the House of Representatives from York County, as a member of the Board of Visitors of Clemson University, and as a former City Councilman and Mayor Pro Tempore for Rock Hill and to direct the Department of Transportation to erect appropriate signs or markers reflecting this designation.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Honorable Coleman G. Poag, and to the Department of Transportation.
