02/21/95 Senate Introduced and adopted SJ-6
A SENATE
RESOLUTION
TO EXPRESS THE DEEPEST SYMPATHY OF THE MEMBERS
OF THE SENATE TO THE FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS OF
MR. KARL E. HERDE OF AIKEN WHO DIED SUNDAY,
FEBRUARY 5, 1995.
Whereas, Mr. Karl E. Herde of Aiken died Sunday, February 5,
1995; and
Whereas, Mr. Herde, a native of Kansas, came to Aiken in 1951
with the United States Atomic Energy Commission. He was a
graduate of Oklahoma State A&M University and held a
master's degree in zoology; and
Whereas, Mr. Herde began his antique auto hobby many years ago
with a Packard sedan of 1930's vintage. He was one of the
founders of the GASCar Antique Auto Club; and
Whereas, best known in Aiken for the antique automobiles he so
handsomely restored and drove in parades and at special events, Mr.
Herde himself appeared as the chauffeur of his own vintage car in
the movie "Chiefs", filmed in Chester; and
Whereas, Mr. Herde was a faithful member of South Aiken
Presbyterian Church where he often appeared at family gatherings
with his 1938 Ford station wagon, "Woody", and
provided free rides for the children; and
Whereas, Director Bill Parchen at the Aiken County Historical
Museum noted that Mr. Herde's association with that institution
dated back to its founding in 1970 at the old abandoned county jail.
He was a "faithful volunteer and docent" and "we
relied on his knowledge and skills a great deal in restoration
work," said Mr. Parchen; and
Whereas, Mr. Herde made a great contribution to the health of
generations of young Aikenites. He was president in 1954 of the
Aiken County Health Council which supported the late Dr. G.
Ashford Milner in a campaign to introduce fluoridation in the
public water system. The group obtained the signatures of dentists
and physicians throughout the county for an advertisement
supporting fluoridation; Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate:
That the members of the Senate express their deepest sympathy to
the family and many friends of Mr. Karl E. Herde of Aiken who
died Sunday, February 5, 1995.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to
the family of Mr. Herde.
