congregation of the First Friendship Baptist Church, a lasting impact
has been made on the lives of the residents of Nichols, South
Carolina; and
Whereas, the First Friendship congregation saw a need for a park and
recreational area in the Nichols community and were able to obtain
a tract of land upon which they erected a park to be enjoyed by all
residents of the neighborhood; and
Whereas, the park and recreational area is a safe and inviting place
for families to gather and children to play; there are basketball courts,
a playground, and other recreational activities available at the park;
and
Whereas, the congregation of First Friendship Baptist Church is in
the process of developing a basketball league in conjunction with
other communities in Marion County, and in doing so, envision a
mentoring program that will provide not only skill development for
the youth involved, but also, opportunities for many young people to
be exposed to exceptional leaders and outstanding role models; and
Whereas, the First Friendship congregation also has adopted a
two-mile stretch of Highway 76 as part of the statewide
"Adopt-A-Highway Program"; and
Whereas, in the three years that the church has been involved in this
highway program, they have never failed to meet their obligation of
keeping the highway free of litter; and
Whereas, this congregation of two hundred has reached far beyond
the confines of their beloved church and with the exceptional church
leaders, the enthusiasm and commitment of the members, and the
