A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
TO COMMEND STEELE HILL AME ZION CHURCH OF LANCASTER COUNTY, FOR ITS MORE THAN ONE HUNDRED TWENTY-TWO YEARS OF SPIRITUAL SERVICE TO ITS MEMBERS AND ITS COMMUNITY AND TO DECLARE FEBRUARY NINTH AND TENTH OF 2002 AS STEELE HILL AME ZION WEEKEND IN LANCASTER COUNTY.
Whereas, Steele Hill AME Zion Church was founded on February tenth in the year 1880 and has since grown over the past one hundred twenty-two years into the center of its community and a common thread that bonds the people of Lancaster County; and
Whereas, the members of Steele Hill AME Zion Church share a rich history of leadership and service, with some families having attended the church for four and five generations; and
Whereas, churches have long been a central place for Americans to meet, not only to worship, but to congregate with their fellow citizens and address the issues facing their community, and Steele Hill AME Zion Church is no exception; and
Whereas, Steele Hill AME Zion Church has long served as a place of fellowship and worship for it members who, while caring for each other, have always worked to meet the physical and spiritual needs of others in the community; and
Whereas, Pastor Marion R. Wilson, the members of Steele Hill AME Zion Church, and many others throughout South Carolina will gather at the church on February ninth and tenth of 2002 to commemorate not only the church's founding but also its resilience through many years of growth and change, and it is only fitting that such an occasion be honored in a very special way. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, commend Steele Hill AME Zion Church of Lancaster County, for its more than one hundred twenty-two years of spiritual service to its members and its community and to declare February ninth and tenth of 2002 as Steele Hill AME Zion Church Weekend in Lancaster County.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Rev. Marion Wilson on behalf of the congregation of Steele Hill AME Zion Church.
