A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
TO EXPRESS THE SORROW OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY FOR THE LOSS OF GODFREY'S MARKET IN HODGES, A HISTORIC LANDMARK AND TREASURED LOCAL ESTABLISHMENT, AND TO EXTEND TO THE COBB-DEPASS FAMILY, THE GODFREY FAMILY, AND TO THE TOWN OF HODGES THEIR SINCERE REGRETS ON THIS TRAGIC OCCASION.
Whereas, on Wednesday, February 13, 2002, Godfrey's Market, a historic and beloved business located in Hodges was tragically destroyed by fire; and
Whereas, this landmark, located between Main Street of Hodges and U.S. 178, has been a gathering place for many residents of Greenwood County for over a century; and
Whereas, the store was originally owned and operated by Maurice and Sara Rose Cobb-Depass, and it served as both a general store and the first post office for the town of Hodges; and
Whereas, Frank and Pete Godfrey have owned and operated the market for fifty-three years and have established a reputation for providing the best fresh meat, country hams, hot dogs, hamburgers, and hoop cheese in the county; and
Whereas, Godfrey's Market was not only historically significant but also a cherished meeting place for over one hundred years for the owners, employees, and patrons who have relied on the store for good food, fun, and fellowship. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, express the sorrow of the General Assembly for the loss of Godfrey's Market in Hodges, a historic landmark and treasured local establishment, and extend to the Cobb-Depass family, the Godfrey family, including Frank, Pete, and Dora, and to the Town of Hodges their sincere regrets on this tragic occasion.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Godfrey family and the descendants of the Cobb family, with a copy presented to Betty Cobb Emerson Riddle and to the Honorable William Allen Nickles, Jr., Mayor of Hodges.
