 A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION TO RECOGNIZE AND COMMEND THE SOUTH CAROLINA AFRICAN
 AMERICAN HERITAGE COMMISSION FOR ITS OUTSTANDING WORK IN PROMOTING AND
 PRESERVING THE AFRICAN AMERICAN CULTURE AND EXPERIENCE.

TO RECOGNIZE AND COMMEND THE SOUTH CAROLINA AFRICAN AMERICAN HERITAGE COMMISSION FOR ITS OUTSTANDING WORK IN PROMOTING AND PRESERVING THE AFRICAN AMERICAN CULTURE AND EXPERIENCE.

Whereas, the South Carolina African American Heritage Council was created by a Joint Resolution of the General Assembly; and

Whereas, Governor Jim Hodges issued an Executive Order in 2001 creating the South Carolina African American Heritage Commission; and

Whereas, the mission of the South Carolina African American Heritage Commission is to identify and promote the preservation of historic sites, buildings, and culture of the African American experience and to assist the efforts of the South Carolina Department of Archives and History; and

Whereas, the fifteen-member commission includes representatives from all regions of the State; and

Whereas, members of the commission have worked tirelessly for more than fourteen years to provide advice and technical information to individuals and groups who want to preserve historic places; and

Whereas, the commission encourages and supports the listing of African American historic sites in the National Register of Historic Places and the placement of South Carolina historical markers to recognize and interpret important places in African American history; and

Whereas, active in educating young children about African American heritage, the commission promotes the infusion of African American history into public school curriculum through partnerships with the Avery Research Center for African American History and Culture and with the South Carolina Department of Education; and

Whereas, the South Carolina African American Heritage Commission does an exceptional job in providing a forum for people interested in preserving African American heritage to learn of events across the State, to share success stories, and to receive technical information through meetings and workshops; and

Whereas, the commission will gather for its annual meeting on January 25-26, 2007, at the South Carolina Archives and History Center to discuss recent activities and future plans; and

Whereas, the South Carolina General Assembly takes great pride in commending the South Carolina African American Heritage Commission for the great strides it has made in reminding all South Carolinians to look both back to their past and ahead to their future. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, recognize and commend the South Carolina African American Heritage Commission for its outstanding work in promoting and preserving the African American culture and experience.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Jannie Harriot, Chair of the South Carolina African American Heritage Commission.
